Jess Lanzillo Departs Wizards of the Coast

I don’t want to get into a game of dueling anecdotes, but that hasn’t been my experience. Even the people using the new rules I’ve talked to are more in the camp “Oh, there’s some good changes” rather than “this is exciting.”

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

The boundary between "I'm an expert" and "I know more than you" in presentation is blurry and often dependent on the relative confidence and security of the receiver just as much as the intent of the presenter. I know I haven't read everything Baker has written, but nothing I've read has come...

The generally frigid reception to 2024's overall banality allows me to keep hoping.

It might be because my tables are made up primarily of other DMs, but if we see someone make a rules mistake, we call it right out. The idea that it would be considered snitching or as something done as expressly antagonistic to another player isn't even something we would consider.

I mean, I care because it's fun to imagine a world where WotC implodes and chaos reigns in the TTRPG market.

That might be Occam's razor for this specific use case where we know extra details, sure. (Although if we have to start adding a bunch of details, we're kind of ruining the idea of Occam's Razor. :) ) As a general rule, seeing multiple high-level individuals leave fairly quickly from any...

Which is probably why these conversations are so often laced with incredulity.

So you're basically saying that a character making a diegetic statement about the campaign setting that already hasn't been introduced is player authoring? Do you really not do that? That's just play. That's how I've played D&D for 30 years.

When a fair number of people with high-level positions all leave a company in a relatively short time frame, I think it's fair to say that the Occam's Razor position is "Something is going on there". Tumult and chaos causing a lot of staff turnover isn't conspiratorial thinking; it's the norm...

    Yes, let’s focus on Daggereart.

The point being made had nothing to do with "GM" and "MC" being (or not being) synonymous. The point was that you can't create a general category of "GM's role in PbtA games" because the different games under the umbrella of "PbtA" have very different expectations of what the GM's role is. The...

An adult worries about what someone says about their hobbies IF those hobbies are being used as an attack on your comportment or competence. Only a child worries that someone is using mean words to attack a hobby simply because they identify with it.

D&D General What makes a TTRPG a "D&D Variant" to you?

Man, that's tough. For me, I'd place -PF2 as a D&D variant but on the outer fringe -Shadow of the Demon Lord is not a D&D variant although it's very "D&D-ish", and Weird Wizard even more so. -Dungeon World echoes D&D tropes but is not a D&D variant. -13th Age is right on the cusp. It's the...

Daggerheart Releases Another Round of Playtesting, Including Two New Classes

The classes they’re revising are NOT in the core book. The revision is just the second round of playtesting for those classes. All 4 classes currently being tested on Void are new.

Ok, but let's be clear on where the objection flows from. This has nothing to do with the fiction as fiction. This is an aesthetic concern about the metagame process by which the GM introduced the fiction. If the GM had defined the rune prior to the roll, and the roll was to determine the...

And thus the exhausting, essential conservatism. There's no looking for a path towards realizing any sort of play goal, there's just reflexive defense of "playing the way I've always played and feels normal to me."

Yes. The fact that D&D is so commonly used for a simulationist agenda (or play with no particular CA agenda that has simulationist trappings) does not mean that the game engine itself is oriented towards sim. There are better games out there that are more oriented towards sim as an explicit...
