Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

If the 18 DEX ninja is the same level, he will be more skilled, yes; but if there's a reasonable level disparity, that's not true; it also overlooks the fact that Hubert will have better ninja skills than others in the party who are not ninjas or similarly stealthy characters. He may well be...

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

:erm: Not liking how you play != demanding that you play my way. If there's any message I hope you take home from this thread, it's that not everyone shares your preferences, that what is fun for you can be seriously off-putting to someone else. That's why managing expectations at the start of...

    What do you do well?

Here's a chance to pat yourself on the back. :) What do you do well when you are running a game? What do your players like about how you referee? What do you think are your greatest strengths behind the screen?

What RPG Products Have You Gotten Recently?

GRUPS Social Engineering - like most GURPS books, it is exhaustive in its coverage and bland as dry white toast. I hoped to get some ideas from Social Engineering for the Flashing Blades courtier house rules I'm working on, and I still might, if reading it would stop putting me to sleep.

Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

Experience is measured in gunfights, so each gunfight you survive adds one to your Experience total. Speed and Bravery increase from one-half to three points, up to a maximum of 96 (d% system) after each gunfight. The amount of points received is based on your existing attribute score; frex, if...

Thanks for trying, JamesonCourage , but at this point I think the horse is gonna stand there until it dies of thirst. An inflexible commitment to flexibility is an inflexible commitment - it really shouldn't be that hard to grasp, and yet here we are.

Thank you for saving me the time of writing that out. :)

Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

Pretty much. Johnny3D3D 's Thog the Barbarian may be a savant at tactics and puzzle-solving, but he may not know how to read or write, may never speak another language other than his native tongue, cannot tell the value of the jewel the merchant gave him as payment for guarding the caravan...

Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

Sounds like good advice to me. :) I understand what you mean. So far the thread primarily addressed roleplaying ability scores, but as you note, those aren't the only examples of rules which are intended to influence how a character is played. Flashing Blades has Secrets - some examples include...

Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

I can't tell if you're missing what I said or ignoring what I said, but in any case I've already addressed this: what the character's INT, WIS, CHA or whatever ability stats represent is limited to what is covered by the rules, and everything else comes from the player, so I don't give a...

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

Honestly, if losing at a roleplaying game is so traumatic that you need to be isolated from the consequences of rolling a one when you really needed a twelve . . . ah, nevermind, not worth it. "I reserve the right to fudge when I deem it appropriate," is no less rigid. Please tell me you...

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

As Bullgrit noted, you're missing the difference between, "I don't like how you do it," and, "You're doing it wrong." With that in mind, I'm done discussing this with you now.

Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

Actually, that was exactly the argument, for which Hubert was the rebuttal. The character's Bravery attribute affects every single shot the character takes in the gunfight. The player cannot ignore the effect of the attribute. That's the beauty of it.

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

Bingo. Bingo again. If you're having a bad day and aren't up to playing, then say so, and we'll reschedule. If you show up to play, you're accepting that bad things may happen to your character.

Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

But the low scores do matter. The rules of most games insure that the character with a lower INT score has fewer skills, fewer skill ranks, and a lower modifier, or even a penalty, than a character with a higher INT score. They may have other effects as well, like the number of spells...

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

I addressed this in my reply to enrious already; I'm not going through it again. And why exactly is that a problem? Is this one of those geek fallacy things, where no one is every supposed to criticize anyone else's opinion? Sorry, I don't subscribe to that rag.
