Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Mages of Strixhaven

I'm of the opinion we don't really need any more wizard archetypes. The class is highly customizable with its spell list, after all. I'd prefer, instead, other casters be tweaked with limited lists and more interesting subclasses. But I'd also rather the wizard go back to being full Vancian.

    Well, it shouldn't have.

So, unfair to a particular class without much of a defense. Sounds fun. This is exactly why paladins were changed. You've pivoted, anyway, because you started out arguing that it should be this way for any DM that wants it this way. It is not this way for precisely this reason - whether or not...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Mages of Strixhaven

No, I'm arguing that you are being unfair to warlocks without a good reason. The fact that you think you need this particular hook for the party to care about that NPC is not a good reason. Presumably you'd have some other strategy to use if there was not a warlock present. The rules do not...

So what? How often do you have parties interacting directly with clerical gods in Tier 1? Why is this a necessary fluff check on warlocks?

They can still kill the party. That isn't toothless at all. You don't need the lazy-dm "I'll take your powers" plot device for an NPC to motivate player actions. Lord Vetinari didn't need to be able to remove anyone's powers to be an effective antagonist - he could order people to remove...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it better to prevent or inflict damage? (psi warrior, battle master, others)

It won't feel that way; one psi die isn't that much and if all you get from a SR is that action surge and second wind, it may be difficult to even talk the party in to taking one. Psi die are a long rest resource and the pool is ultimately very small - you have to adjust your burn rate to match...

It doesn't mean the Patron can't be an NPC, although you don't need a warlock patron to come up with an antagonist.

Agreed. Classes that can have powers removed at the whim of a DM were always bad and the fewer of those there are, the better. Paladins were insufferable in previous editions precisely because of this issue.

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's 5e vs Tasha's 5e where do you see 5e heading?

Most characters that level up at least once (1->2) are ineligible for feats, so that's padding the denominator. Stick with 4+ or, as others have mentioned, 8+, as many using pointbuy are highly motivated to take main stat ASIs first. Of course, there are far fewer characters at that level, but...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it better to prevent or inflict damage? (psi warrior, battle master, others)

One other thing, the extra damage from Telekinetic Strike triggers a second concentration check - so that may have special value in some cases. Really, though, if the party Bard isn't already handing out BI like candy, you should be conserving Psi Dice - because you aren't getting them all back...

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's 5e vs Tasha's 5e where do you see 5e heading?

They need a sampling frame to get unbiased estimates. They can act on biased estimates, but that has risks which should be obvious. At any rate, without unbiased data, we can't trust anything they say about who does or does not use feats.

D&D 5E (2014) Is it better to prevent or inflict damage? (psi warrior, battle master, others)

Dead enemies inflict no damage. Unless you or an ally is at death's door, use resources to kill. And even in the latter case, I'd make the call based on the scenario - if they are just gonna get downed on the next creature in the initiative order's turn, don't bother.

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's 5e vs Tasha's 5e where do you see 5e heading?

The only method of calculating this without population level data requires assuming your sample is unbiased and subbing in your sample standard deviation to calculate a standard error. That assumption is entirely wrong. Not even Hasbro can (or will) field a full census of all players of 5e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's 5e vs Tasha's 5e where do you see 5e heading?

I don't need to assume that. They haven't conducted a player census, nor are they capable of doing so even if they were inclined to do it. Thus, they do not have access to either a sampling frame of all player from which to draw a probability sample or population-level player data to calculate...
