D&D 5E (2014) When did Role become Roll?

Sorry, but I can't agree with your premise. For me, a character is BOTH personality and mechanics. You seem have a way that you enjoy to play D&D (which is perfectly fine), but that isn't everyone's way, and nor should it be.

    D&D 5E (2014) What would you change?

My biggie is that they doled out weapon proficiences way too liberally. It made a lot of weapon types virtually unused, and made a fun and interesting aspect of combat bland and overlooked.

D&D 5E (2014) Mobile Monk - should I take any levels of Rogue?

So I have a high level character that has 6 levels of shadow monk and 5 levels of assassin with the mobility feat. He's a blast. I'm thinking I'll start taking more levels in monk to get more ki points (stunning is awesome), but it really is nice to have a d6 or two (or three) of sneak attack...

D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

It's fun to drop in on threads like these and just muse on how things must have twisted and turned to get to current discussion. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Drop bow and unsheathe sword: still get to attack?

Kinda like - Player: Time to run! I sheathe my weapon (free action), dash to the cliff and dive into the water below (action) and swim away from the fire elementals. DM: Hmmm, bummer - too bad you didn't save your free action to take a big breath and hold it before you hit the water. Roll a CON...

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

Split the party - and have all the skill checks fall on the non-rogue half. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranged attacks from behind a corner/an object

This is started to go down some very worn paths. There's been plenty of sage advice and other discussions about this already.

D&D 5E (2014) Horizon Walker and Rogue dual class question

Can't agree that this is OP. Piercing resistance isn't rare, but it's not super common either.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the WORST party composition possibly with 4 or 5 characters?

All wizards in a dungeon where you can't cast magic.

D&D 5E (2014) My Players defeated Strahd in one round and it was glorious! (CoS Spoilers inside)

Sounds pretty epic to me. I probably would be cheering too - especially since how easily things can go sideways for players in CoS.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you prefer to fight with melee or ranged weapons?

I play a monk/rogue with mobility, melee hit, stun, and run for me! :)

D&D 5E (2014) The "Powergamers (Min/maxer)" vs "Alpha Gamers" vs "Role Play Gamers" vs "GM" balance mismatch "problem(s)"

I've also seen the Monty Python variety - where the more humorous, satirical, and outrageous decisions made get rewarded by the DM. Most of the scenarios involves much rejoicing. And your point applies here as well.

D&D 5E (2014) The "Powergamers (Min/maxer)" vs "Alpha Gamers" vs "Role Play Gamers" vs "GM" balance mismatch "problem(s)"

And I find it's these kinds of players - not powergamers - that are the most disruptive and are most guilty of ruining the fun for the group. Agreed. But I think the more egregious sin from the DM is to make rulings and challenges that try to micromanage playstyle and "punish" players for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's: Ranger - Gloom Stalker

As a player, I would be fine with either way (or maybe a perception check to hear location in the midst of battle battle noise, shot distance and and acuteness of hearing taken into consideration). But I would expect that the same ruling goes towards things with greater invisibility, as there is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Group Rule Deal-Breakers

This. Basically it comes down to a player willing to sacrifice the group objective in order to "express" their character. You can argue that isn't realistic, as any such adventurer would have gotten themselves a Darwin Award before starting out to be an adventurer.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Wound/Vitality System

If you want a grittier system, why not have it so healing spells only stabilize a character making death saving throws? Once they are stable, then they come up. Makes going down a bigger deal, without going overboard.

    D&D 5E (2024) Toward a Theory of 6th Edition

I hear you on 1 - especially at higher levels, there's too many reality-bending spells that get grandfathered in from previous editions. Also, trim back the spells that need 5+ paragraphs to explain. Also, cut out the ones no one uses just to make for fewer pages in the spell appendix. Flipping...

    D&D 5E (2014) Shadow Monk: Straight, or Monk/Rogue

    Ahh, extra skill proficiencies :).

    D&D 5E (2014) Shadow Monk: Straight, or Monk/Rogue

Indeed. :) Keep in mind though that you'll have 3 levels of play before you need to choose in your case.

    D&D 5E (2014) Shadow Monk: Straight, or Monk/Rogue

Sure, you can, but using shadow step that way won't give you the advantage on your next melee attack. That's huge, since advantage allows you to sneak attack anything, even if there isn't an ally adjacent to the enemy. Plus, you'd be surprised how useful that extra 10 movement is in combat. Much...
