Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

True, but again the amount of variety you get when it comes to combat Per Day encounters seems to be rather small. Two for a level 5 character doesn't seem to be much.

Aren't the defenders supposed to prevent the said skirmishers from flanking the Wizard in the first place? ;).

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

Not really. The reason why the once in a blue moon effects were cast using scrolls is because the Wizard just doesn't have that many spell slots to use in the first place ;). And if you're going to be strict about it, pulling a scroll out of a case is at the minimum a Move Action. Finding a...

    D&D 4E I really don't like the new 4E PHB cover

We're talking about the non-roleplayers buying stuff for their 12 year old nephew here ;)

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

I'm not entirely sure that making the player track their own status effects is a good thing. I mean, most players even forget about the buffs they have on their characters like Bless. ;) Though I will say that making players roll for a save at the top of their round (if done consistently) would...

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

In short, you don't want a situation where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Definitely not a bad design choice. Ah. So what you're saying is that the decision to make Saves standard for everyone is because the "smoothening" of the Save rolls (because you now roll every round) has...

    D&D 4E I really don't like the new 4E PHB cover

Not really, actually. This is something I touched upon in a thread over at Wizards, so I'll repeat what I said here. World of Warcraft actually made a conscious effort to make two, opposing factions within the game - one composed of "heroic" races (The Alliance), and the other composed of...

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

True. Actually, I also wonder if there's a way for abilities to evolve. For instance, a level 1 "Encounter-only" ability might morph into an At-will ability by level 5.

Reason 'squares' is better than 'feet': the metric system

Just a minor note: Precise units of measurement (i.e. meters, feet, etc) are products of a scientific body that was tasked to create a common set of measurements for all of the world's scientists to use. Before this body was created, measurements were generally extremely adhoc. One foot for one...

    Implementation of divine powers

Just a minor quibble - it's probably a pet peeve but I'm interested in seeing if other people have noticed it. Why does it seem as though Divine Power characters don't exactly follow the "At Will, Per Encounter, Per Day" model used by all the other classes? There just seem to be an awful lot...

    D&D 4E I really don't like the new 4E PHB cover

Depends really. Again, I credit Peter Jackson and JK Rowling for showing that heroic fantasy is more about "fighting for what's good and right in this world", and that's it's not always just an offshoot of the mindless violence action flicks. However, I will note that the dragonborn may seem a...

    D&D 4E I really don't like the new 4E PHB cover

Not really. The Lord of the Rings is about as traditional as it gets, and it was a pretty huge box-office success. Harry Potter doesn't really introduce much to the traditional Wizards and Witches tropes (except perhaps for Quidditch), and yet it's also a huge worldwide hit. I think Hollywood...

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

Actually, I think only I keep bringing it up. :D Not really. You've actually hit upon the main problem of Axis & Allies: There is only one initial setup. The same number of troops start in the same number of territories each game. Each player gets the same amount of money at the start of every...

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

Actually, I've actually done it for Heroscape. And the thing that worries me is that this feels way too much like the Heroscape demos that I run ^_^. (One of the major lessons I learned demoing Heroscape though: Players, even kids as young as 5, don't like the Basic version. They want the full...

    D&D 4E I really don't like the new 4E PHB cover

That would be a pretty good 4E cover. Nice, traditional, and eye-catching. Just a little rough on the edges that I can't quite put my finger on.

Reason 'squares' is better than 'feet': the metric system

Yup. And that rarely needs to be done.

    D&D 4E I really don't like the new 4E PHB cover

The artwork didn't do it for me either. Also, I'm firmly in the "D&D should draw upon iconics" camp. Yes, the game has to evolve. But D&D is first and foremost the original RPG in the minds of most people. It's got the most history and tradition. It has to draw upon this strength, not discard...

Reason 'squares' is better than 'feet': the metric system

Actually, the real reason why squares are better than "5 feet" is because it takes fewer mental gymnastics before you can arrive at the information you need. In the old edition, if someone says "You move 25 feet", you need to first divide 25 feet by 5 feet to realize you're moving 5 squares...

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

Again, compared to Risk or A&A, not really. However, the Save mechanic is smoother than in previous editions, where "one bad roll condemns you to kill your party mates". At least in 4E you have a chance to save every round.

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

The "bunch" you refer to is still just a few dice rolls (relatively speaking). Assume a fight lasts five rounds, and all five of those rounds the monster is able to recharge his ability. That's a mere five dice rolls. By contrast - take a look at the other game examples I showed. Just one...
