    D&D 5E (2024) The Battle Master Paradigm

If you accept the premise that the fighter as a whole is underpowered (which it is), then you could simply buff every subclass without worrying about upsetting anything.

D&D General Wizard vs Fighter - the math

While it is known that casting spells for damage dealing is not optimal, it is useful to know that suboptimal play from a wizard is superior to the basic fighter option. Or rather, you have shown that optimising for something less than ideal (damage) a wizard can still outperform a fighter...

D&D 5E (2024) Are You Happy with the Selection of Subclasses?

They should toss Brawler and replace it with Echo Knight.

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

Not necessarily, but if a player looks to start playing they're likely not going to buy a book called Bestiary or Armory or whatever. If you have a book called Player's Handbook or whatever then it's important that it is a clear entry point. This is why Player's Handbook II probably wasn't a...

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

Yes, except Bestiary 6 is not aimed at players just like Bestiary 1 wasn't, and as far as I know Adventurer's Armory 2 is more of a niche product so it seems unlikely to cause confusion. Player Core 2 sounds problematic, though.

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

Sidenote: As far as I remember, and related to the discussion about numbering products, Paizo also steered clear of using names like Player's Guide II. They had Advanced Player's Guide which be more obviously something that you don't need when you start playing.

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

Yes exactly, except you should be able to know what the effect would be before you attempt it, you should be able to know if you can even do it in the first place, and you should be able to know what the consequences would be if you fail, and you should be able to know how long it will take to...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll: How do you feel about 5e pace of releases?

Imo they're too slow with their releases. I don't personally care about more crunch, but I want them to provide more optional/modular things. A good system for ships. A good system for domain management. A good system for spelljammers.

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

This is just something I've heard say online and never experienced in person since I was not exposed to US marketing at that time, but I was told that 4E marketing was absolutely terrible back in the day. My understanding was that the attempts at hyping the system was really hostile to old...

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

If I remember correctly I even added some stupid exception in case the GM does not think the taunt is appropriate, but you ignored that when you reply here, just like people ignored every exception I listed in the original ability... But screw it: Mundane Taunt: Every enemy within 30 feet who...

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

I made a comment in another thread once, saying that a taunt ability that forces enemies to attack you if they fail a will save is a perfectly viable design for a non-magical ability. It spawned a fairly heated discussion. Apparently some people think it's not possible to trick people without...

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

I think the OP is asking this because it's quite common for someone to suggest a solution to the balance problem only for someone else to complain about it being supernatural and not mundane, or whatever. I don't think it's really a desire to label everything from the OP's perspective.

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

I see two approaches to the fighter and they should both be available to the player: 1: The class that isn't supernatural but which becomes supernatural at or around level 7 2: The class that is explicitly supernaturally themed from levels 1-20. There is no design space for a "mundane"...

D&D General The Importance of Verisimilitude (or "Why you don't need realism to keep it real")

I don't care about "realism" so that aspect of verisimilitude is uninteresting to me, but I think it can help with the tone of a campaign by putting some restrictions on things like class selection or race selection. Eccentric character creation choices can definitely be annoying. I had a call...

D&D 5E (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

Ok I'll give you another limitation. Let's assume that the caster is alone. It's a one-man party. Imagine trying to climb over an obstacle with athletics, or just use: Dimension Door, Misty Step, Fly, Spider Climb Imagine trying to cross a pit or ravine trying to get a rope across, or just...

    D&D 3.x Retro-cloning D&D 3.0

It's a bit funny but I always found PF1 felt like a much simplified version of D&D 3.0 and 3.5. Unless I'm mistaken both 3.0 and 3.5 had a strange skill system where it actually mattered, if you multi classed, on which level you purchased what skill (because the cost of a skill was affected by...

D&D 5E (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

I deliberately picked wizard because it's not a charisma class, and then I deliberately picked non-social type spells because someone was complaining about class comparisons always focusing on social skills or something. So clarification: A wizard gets better at everything when they level up...

D&D 5E (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

Ehh crap. I accidentally pressed OK in the middle of a half written reply so I had to edit my original comment away to avoid people responding to something incomplete... Argumentum ad populum. And secondly: Check some fighter optimisation guides. Champion isn't high on those lists. You'll find...

D&D 5E (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

I'm saying that the class is weak, not that it isn't popular.
