The Ogre Killed the Dwarf in 3 Rounds

The point of ogres is that they're big and dangerous to low-level characters. The ogre smacking down the dwarf in three rounds is probably two rounds too many.

D&D is not a supers game.

I don't see what's wrong with having characters starting the heroism at level three. It's much easier for the DM to say, "We're going to start at a higher level" than it is for the DM to say, "We're going to start with half HP."

D&D 5E (2014) D&D NEXT: Adding dex mod to hp, taking it off ac.

I could not possibly disagree more with this, particularly the bolded bits. The individual events within the game are resolved via mechanics and the end result is the formation a narrative. However, the importance of a particular event in the narrative matters much in the way that a brick...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D NEXT: Adding dex mod to hp, taking it off ac.

In general, I do. 4e made that impossible, which is why I want for HP to be pushed into the "less abstract" territory in 5e. I'm fine with the HD healing compromise (as long as it requires a healing kit) thus far, but no more healing surge nonsense.

    Bounded Accuracy L&L

Will be honest, while I'm okay with the design philosophy, I'm getting tired of these corporate buzzwords. In 4e, we had "exception-based design," "design tech," "effects-based design," "narrative control," and "economy of actions." Now we have "modularity," "flatter math," and "bounded...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D NEXT: Adding dex mod to hp, taking it off ac.

HP is an abstraction, but I'd rather keep it less abstract than more. It was one of the things I really hated about 4e.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

"Balanced" and "believable" are two entirely different things.

    The PvP Playtest

This is off-topic, but are you the same GX.Sigma who posts on In Mala Fide?

    Give the Fighter more surges.

    Good idea.

    The PvP Playtest

Sounds about right. Also sounds about right. Rogues best be sneaking.

    Give the Fighter more surges.

Surges should be 1/encounter, in my opinion.

D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition is Right About Lower Bonuses

There is a problem when your bonuses/penalties become so large that the only chance of sucess/failure is roll a 20/roll a 1. I don't much like that, personally. Some people do. I generally think in terms of attacks and saving throws. Skills are far less important to the RNG for me, simply...

If people are super worried about damage on the fighter...

I keep seeing grumping about the fighter's damage per round and how the cleric can buff up and be as good as him for a short period of time.

If people are super worried about damage on the fighter...

While this is completely off-topic, "boni" is not a word. Neither is "bonii." The correct term is "bonuses." Saying "boni" is like saying "overstanding" or "zir."

    So I played tonight...

Basically. It sounds like D&D isn't for LS since he doesn't actually like the rules to it.

If people are super worried about damage on the fighter...

...why not just bump up the damage die he rolls with weapons by one step? If they're already doing that for racial classes, it's not a big deal to do it again. Obviously, they'd have to be careful about stacking this effect (the dwarven fighter would go from 2d6 to 2d8 damage), but I'm not...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition is Right About Lower Bonuses

Not to sperg out on you, but this is not what the "RNG" means. The RNG is the randon number generator, which is what is used to determine success or failure. In D&D, the RNG is the d20. In Dark Heresy, it's a d100. In various White Wolf games, you use a dice pool of d10s. When gambling, you...

Dear Wizards of the Coast blog post...

That feel when some guy writes out his TL;DR thesis about D&D and tells an uncaring, unfeeling corporation how to run their business.

Why I Think Rolling For Hit Points is a Bad Thing

Roll all HD at each level to calculate HP. Is the HP that you rolled larger than your maximum? Good, you keep it. Is it smaller than your maximum? Keep the old value as a consolation prize.
