Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I’m trying to remember if there was ever a section on party composition in any game I’ve read.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I wonder how many of these hot takes are reactions to some one-off bad con experience.

Dungeons & Dragons Dumps Disclaimers From Book Credits Page

It could very well be the difference between a required whimsical disclaimer vs an inspired whimsical disclaimer. Making it optional could maybe result in more of them. That said, I just remembered Office Space and scenes encouraging Jennifer Aniston to “wear more flair.” 😂

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Let us know when you have it all straightened out.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

Do you only have issues with skilled play in games that aren't "classic playstyle games?" What makes it "wildly inappropriate" in a trad play game? Going off your OP, I am guessing you see the "challenge dungeon" as a challenge to a "balanced party" with a thief, cleric, mage and fighter, and...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

Been in plenty and it hasn’t happened. Tell us some stories though, I’d be curious to hear them.

Dungeons & Dragons Dumps Disclaimers From Book Credits Page

    Maybe if they’re optional they’ll be better/funnier.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

How often really do players get totally blocked? I say the number is infinitesimal.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

You’re describing an old school tournament one shot where teams got points for figuring out various challenges in an adventure module. Points were awarded for many things beyond “extracting the most treasure possible without dying” but because gold used to equal XP, it was included as one...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

My definition would be any challenge that requires player teamwork and thought. It’s the opposite of “I push the Mystery Solving button on my character sheet.”

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

It’s not my definition of skilled play either. Puzzle central it ain’t.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

Hmm, that’s not my definition of “play focused minded GMs.”

    Hire an NPC if necessary.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

We've done, but it does involve pulling punches. Still, plenty of PC deaths along the way.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Indeed, is it the "monster" that is evil or the mob (us) driven by our own fears and hatreds? That is the true message. That said, there are beasties both human and otherwise to be defeated, and it's okay to list them in the Monster Manual with all their darknesses.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I am tending to agree, but only insomuch as players should have the freedom to play what they want. That said, I often see players ask "what would be a good fit for the party?" if they are entering an established game. So they are thinking in terms of complementary roles too. I would be more...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Entering this discussion late and apologies if it's already been covered, but it seems to me that, even outside D&D, there's long been a struggle or questioning of the definition of an "evil" monster. As far back as Frankenstein (was it the monster who was evil or was it the doctor who created...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

In any case, a PC with magic rings on every finger is well into the realm of ridiculous.
