Going from Rules Cyclopedia to 1st Edition?

My gaming group has essentially given up on 4th edition for the time being. We've switched our focus to the Rules Cyclopedia to get our D&D fix. One thing I was thinking about, though, was if I should up the game to 1st edition. I've got the core books plus a few others, but I haven't looked at...

    Surviving low-level old school D&D

I've only started playing older edition D&D lately, and despite the magic user having only one hit point, so far all of the deaths have been poor travelers duped into adventuring with the party. Also, we're not so focused on combat--it's mainly tricks that the players use to get around obstacles...

What alternate game systems are you trying out if you don't like 4e?

I'm a little bit lost at sea in terms of what to play. I'm still on the fence about 4th edition, and I like a good Rules Cyclopedia/BECMI game every now and again, but I'm not sure that anything is really scratching ye olde itch. I'd like to try true20, but I'm not sure if it'd work either. I...

    Games you won't play

I won't play anything where some sort of harmful or offensive material is part of the game system (I'm looking at ye, FATAL), and I'm not into anything too focused on just combat ( a small turn off about 4th edition). In terms of genre, if it's inspired by anime, count me the hell out...

    battlelore vs Memoir '44

From what I understand, you need the terrain pack, Eastern Front Expansion and, for one campaign, the Air power expansion. If I remember right, there are three big campaigns, one of which requires only the base game, and the other two requiring the expansions. I'm pretty sure that's all you need.

    I've DMed 4e and I PREFER DMing: A poll

If 3rd Edition or 4th edition are my only choices, I'd definitely go with 4th. I thought that as soon as I'd played it. In all of the D&D I've played, though, I may prefer a Rules Cyclopedia game. It's just so free form and effortless.

    battlelore vs Memoir '44

I've been meaning to get it, but so far none of my local gaming stores have carried it. I guess I'll just order it online sometime. It sounds really cool, though. It's exactly the kind of thing I would have always wanted for the game.

    Small World

I should hopefully be getting my copy in the mail tomorrow. Traded off Stone Age for Small World. Stone Age was getting bland. Anyway, I'm excited to get and play it.

    battlelore vs Memoir '44

I didn't realize the BattleLore expansions had such sparse content for the price! I like the Memoir '44 expansions a lot, but some of the additions seem kind of goofy to me. Mainly, I think the British rules in the Mediterranean Theatre expansion is kind of weird, and feels added just because...

    battlelore vs Memoir '44

I've never played Battlecry (the first game of the system) or Battlelore, but I have played Commands and Colors: Ancients and Memoir '44. I've heard Battlelore is like C&C but with a few extra mechanics attached. Going on that, I would tell you that Memoir is a simpler game, with maybe a little...

    Talisman with the kid

I'd never played Talisman until recently, as a college student, but it was still somewhat nostalgic, as it reminded me a bit of a few old games I played in grade school (Heroquest and Key to the Kingdom). I've never played it with children, but I've played it with somewhat drunk college...

    Wargames for casual newcomers?

So, I was thinking today about picking up Battlelore as my next wargamey purchase. But then I noticed one of my local game stores has Hammer of the Scots, and I have some store credit there. So I was wondering, is that a game worth picking up? It's rated pretty well on BGG, but the reviews all...

    Top 10 boardgames on BGG

My only problem is with my board lying flat, but it's good enough that it's not really big deal. Otherwise, I don't see very many criticisms. I mean, it's not super attractive, but it's certainly not hideous. Also, I know of plenty of other 2 player games that have much more involved set up.

    Top 10 boardgames on BGG

I definitely agree about 1960, for the most part. I do kind of like the drawing cubes instead of rolling dice, but other than that Twilight Struggle is certainly superior. I do like any game where you can play as Nixon, though. With Twilight Struggle, the only thing that keeps me from...

    Top 10 boardgames on BGG

I've only played Twilight Struggle a handful of times, but so far it seems pretty cool. I understand why so many people like it. I also got 1960: The Making of the President, since I heard it was similar, and sounded like it might fit my tastes a tad better. After playing both, I find I like...

    Wargames for casual newcomers?

I just got Wings of War today as an impulse buy from one of our local game stores. We've only played it twice so far, but it's been a lot of fun. I'm seriously considering getting both the Burning Drachens and Watch Your Back! expansions/add-ons/whatever they are.

    World War I wargames

I'm interested in They Shall Not Pass, but I don't know how into wargames any of my friends are. I've also considered Paths of Glory in the past, but it may take too long for out simple tastes. Mainly I just find World War I fascinating.

    Wargames for casual newcomers?

Thanks again for the responses and info. Right now I'm working on acquiring some good eurogames, but once my collection feels sufficient in that department I'll probably look back into wargames. The ASL starter kits and Conflict of Heroes interest me the most, I think. Combat Commander sounds...

    Have you played these boardgames?

So far I've only played Twilight Struggle, which was last night. And we were doing the scoring wrong. I should have guesses something was up when the cold war ended during Eisenhower's administration. I'm thinking about getting Tigris & Euphrates because it sounds pretty cool, and I like the...
