    Mind vs. Minis: THE POLL

Two goblin guards at the entrance to the caverns? Mind. Six kobold scouts in a small forest clearing? Mind. Five bugbear warriors and two bugbear archers in a tunnel t-section? Mind. Twenty human soldiers on the battlements? Mind. Five goblin archers, twelve goblin raiders, three ogres and a...

For playtesters: the lack of morale rules

I like to think of hit points as a good indicator of morale. They don't represent simply physical resistance, they also represent the will to fight on. However, in that case, it's not often that monsters get to run away when their hit points have been depleted, unless you ignore the "falls...

    Words are hard!

Especially the people that only think they know how it's pronounced. Like in one of my old groups. Player One: And I'll finish this guy with another coop de grace. Player Two: Argh! It's pronounced coo. De. Grah! Me and Player Three: Well, actually... (Hint: It's actually pronounced "coo de...

CON no longer useful for boosting HP

My Strength 16, Constitution 20 Dwarven Barbarian (Morgrim the Undying) would beg to differ with your assertion. And when Morgrim "begs to differ", it generally ends with the other guy "begging for his life".

    Wisdom too powerful?

In a way, yes. But I don't want everybody with a 14 Intelligence being master linguists (knowing four very different languages "just because"). I'd like to see Intelligence as a limit on how many languages can be known (besides Common and a racial language), instead of as automatic bonus...

Playtest Report - Deeper into the Caves (no Kobolds or rats, I promise!)

How did your Wizard gain Advantage with a Burning Hands? You don't have to make any rolls for that, it's the enemies that have to make Dexterity saves. Unless you mean the enemies had Disadvantage.

They have a cave troll (ogre)... [Playtest Report]

They're not specifically designed for gridless. Before 4e, these were the same types of measurements used for the battlemaps. We didn't have any problems then.

Smite as the signature move of Paladins.

Knight and Guardian are flavor. Neither of those are required for Paladin-hood. Before 4e, Paladins weren't defenders, and didn't intercept attacks for allies. Theme is optional. And Background carries nothing that is Paladin-iconic, other than the idea that Paladins are knightly. That's not...

Smite as the signature move of Paladins.

As I've said several times: Cure Spells Protection From/Magic Circle Against spells Domain

Smite as the signature move of Paladins.

Well, that's recent, so likely not what the other guy was talking about. But thanks. This is... problematic. They're going to have to work hard to differentiate it from the Cleric...

    Some spell questions

I agree. But this isn't a final product, they probably just haven't gotten around to ritualizing everything that should be ritualized. If it's not a requirement (specifically, if it's not listed under the Requirement header), it's flavor. I'd say that at the very least, the Wizard could just...

They have a cave troll (ogre)... [Playtest Report]

Did you remember Skill Mastery? If a Rogue rolls less than 10 on the die for a skill they're trained in, it counts as a 10. That's what makes Rogues the great skill-monkeys, is that they can't ever really botch a skill check for a skill they're trained in.

Not a Playtest Report: well, it's definitely D&D.

That's why he's called the Fighter, and not the Armored-Guy-Who's-Okay-At-Fighting. The Fighter should be dominating combat. As has been stated, balance is over the adventure in Next, not over the encounter. The Fighter will dominate the combats, the Rogue will dominate scouting and...

DM empowerment and its effect on PbP and Organized Play

DM Empowerment can make PbP go even more smoothly, though. Now, all you have to do is say "This is what I do." Then the DM will take your appropriate ability score, roll it for you, and tell you what happens. It's not like you'd do any better at the tabletop; you don't get to say "I'm going to...

Class features, Dailies and Ability Scores

Ooh, nice catch, I hadn't noticed that. Gives a decent advantage for someone who wants to play a very tough Fighter or a clever Rogue. Since Constitution and Intelligence are only marginally useful for both classes (Constitution being more useful for Fighters than Intelligence is for Rogues). I...

Healing Fully With Rest - Is It Really That Big of a Deal?

Some people want more long-term attrition. I'll admit, I'd rather the group have to take more than an 8 hour rest every once in a while, myself. There are some good options, though. My personal favorite: The lower your HP goes, the more of your HP damage is actual injury. Below half HP, there...

Why I Think Rolling For Hit Points is a Bad Thing

I'm actually starting to like the idea of some of the old-school stuff, like random Hit Points, randomized ability scores, and so on. But, like we've added house rules to soften ability score generation (it used to be 3d6 down the line, not 4d6 drop the lowest reroll 1's, seven times, drop the...

Smite as the signature move of Paladins.

Cure spells, Protection From/Magic Circle Against Evil, they already have Smite, Remove Fear, they already have Detect Evil. Again, what happened before has no bearing on what happens now. There will be a Paladin. It just won't be its own class.

And The Kobolds Dined Well... A Playtest Report

Actually, for Next, jumping is no longer a roll at all; that's the rule we've all been talking about. You get to jump a number of feet equal to your Strength score if you have a running start, or half that if you don't.
