Oh it is cool. I'm just trying to make the concept more fun in practice. No save ability score lowering can be fun, but it's much easier to have it work via an attack or save or check.

Furthermore the lead devs have specifically stated that it works with all ranged attacks, including ranged spell attacks.

Got 9 out of 10. The only one I got wrong was replacing a known cantrip with another. I could have sworn that you could do that in a few different ways. EDIT: I see that I'm not the only one who got that one wrong. Good to know I'm not alone in my confusion :)

I think that WOTC is aware of this and has been attempting to give more interesting options for the class, I just don't know if those are enough to solve the problem you're describing.
