    Paladins - likes and dislikes?

I like paladins, generally speaking. I'm not too fond of the emphasis placed on mounted combat. I've never really had campaigns that took place in rolling planes where you can use a horse to good effect. (Although the PH2 paladin variant removes that issue.) I've always felt that the...

    What alignment is Baltar?

Well, a neutral person, for example, doesn't take actions that predictably and directly lead to the deaths of thousands because he's pissed off. He might snap at people or throw a hissy fit instead. Perhaps throw paperweights as people.

    What alignment is Baltar?

Baltar is chaotic evil. He's erratic and self-centered, and willing to place his own interests above the interests of the whole of the human race. Chaotic evil. The only reason he hasn't got everybody killed is because he's so lucky. Half the time I believe #6 when she says that she's an...

Casting Sleep in the surprise round

Right; most encounters start well within 100 feet in dungeons, which means that it's hard for enemies to get out of range of sleep. I'm not sure how that's an argument that sleep sucks.

Casting Sleep in the surprise round

Sleep has a pretty good range; 100 feet at 1st level. I'm not sure how them moving right next to you is a problem (unless they surround you, of course).

Casting Sleep in the surprise round

While I'm not arguing that sleep is any good, you normally won't have to worry about the enemies moving.

    Paladin Question

The paladin's code of conduct requires a paladin to "punish those who harm or threaten innocents". The code says that the paladin must mete out punishment, not that the paladin must turn wrong-doers over to the local authorities. If the paladin doesn't mete out justice, she is violating her code...

Moving to a Kneeling or Sitting position?

In d20 Modern, dropping to a prone, sitting, or kneeling position is a free action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity, and standing up from a prone, sitting, or kneeling position is a move action that provokes an attack of opportunity. There aren't any rules in D&D or d20 Modern...

hardness and HP of a Spiked Chain

Well, the table has 3 categories: blades, metal-hafted weapons, and hafted weapons. Of those three, a spiked chain would probably fall into the metal-hafted weapons category. A two-handed blade and a two-handed hafted weapon both have twice as many hit points as a one-handed weapon in the same...

What level should Magic Missile be?

At the end of the day, magic missile deals only 5d4+5 points of damage. It can't compete with 2nd level spells like tasha's hideous laughter or glitterdust, and most of the time it can't compete with scorching ray. In my opinion, the only reason it looks so attractive at 1st level is because...

    Fudging dice rolls

I never fudge the dice; I roll out in the open. Players would notice quickly if a creature's attack bonus kept changing. There's actually some fun in rolling out in the open if the player's are paying attention; you get to see the look on thier faces when you ask "does a 46 hit your AC?" when...

    And then suddenly...

Well, I don't think there are many sentences that actually require "suddenly" to work. Its an adverb, after all. You could say "the ninjas attack!" instead of "suddenly, the ninjas attack!". My commonly used phrase is "it appears to be". It appears to be a door. It appears to be a man. It...

Fiddling with the standard special maneuvers

I've always had a few problems with the normal combat maneuvers. First, they aren't well-balanced against one another. Trip is clearly the best, being the easiest to perform in most cases and having the best associated feat, while sunder and disarm languish. Second, they're a little hard to...

    Duskblades Only Get Simple Weapons

It doesn't really have much effect, in my opinion. Duskblades are already limited to using weapons that leave a hand free, and the difference between between a heavy mace and a longsword is nearly insignifigant. Much less signifigant than the penalty to Constitution elves labor under.

    damage reduction

Only damage reduction/magic and damage reduction/epic work like that. Damage reduction/silver does not allow your natural attacks to overcome damage reduction/silver.

Favorite Dump Stat for Purely Roleplaying Reasons

Wisdom. Unwise characters are amusing. I end up playing unwise character often, actually. Generally, if I have a good base Will save, I have a bad Wisdom. (My fighter-types never have less than a 14, of course. Being dominated at every turn isn't a lot of fun.)

Thinking of D&D adventure in the general abstract

I think that most of my playtime has taken place around level 10 or so, and I tend to think of 10th-level campaigns when I think of D&D, where you fight beholders and mind flayers and dragons and what have you.

    Critique this character sheet

Unless you're providing free printing to the users, the color, patterened background has to go. Far to much ink. I'm not convinced that you need player, campaign, background, personality archtype, and personality traits sections. None of those have any game effect, do they? (I haven't looked...

    Two Weapon Rend: weak?

The funny part is that Two-Weapon Rend was first published as an epic feat in the Epic Level Handbook. Hee hee.
