Trying again: What would it take to get _you_ to use core only?

It depends. I don't think I could be enticed to play a core-only fighter, but a core-only wizard isn't set back much.

    Mages vs Clerics

I think the best chance for the wizard is to open with a spell that gives him some breathing room to cast buffing spells. Clerics generally don't have great Intelligence, so a maze spell, combined with time stop, gives you a few free rounds to get some defenses up. A good spell to start with...

    Mages vs Clerics

In a duel, the cleric would probably win. Clerics have better Fortitude and Will saves than wizards, so a cleric is more likely to pull off a first-round kill.

Would you play a class with no special abilities?

I don't think I would. They'd be pretty weak without special abilities, even with the very good base stats, and they'd be mechanically dull. Excruciatingly dull. I can barely stand to play a fighter.

What Makes DnD Fun For You?

I'd agree with new spell levels. What class other than wizard offers so many class features to choose from, and so frequently?

Generic Human Warblade 1: First Stance

Stance of clarity. There will always be combats where you fight only one enemy, and +2 AC is very useful there. I'm not sure why there's so much love for punishing stance. Its good at 1st level, but as time goes on, I'm sure I'd prefer to have the AC back. +1d6 damage isn't that big a bonus...

Agile Shield Fighter and Two Weapon Fighting

Even better, buy a +1 bashing spiked heavy wooden shield. For 4157 gp, you get a +1 shield and a +1 one-handed weapon that deals 2d6 points of damage.

Strike of Righteous Vitality for a Warblade

A cleric could maintain a full attack/heal routine for about 10-12 rounds of combat. According to various polls I've seen around here, an average combat at high levels lasts about 3 rounds, and people fight about 3-4 times per day, for a total of 9-12 rounds of combat each day. Thus, a cleric...

Strike of Righteous Vitality for a Warblade

If that's a balance problem, then the problem is with the maneuver, not the warblade. A crusader could do that as well.

    Cleaver?

Why not use stats for a pre-existing weapon? Depending on the type of cleaver, it seems like dagger, shortsword, or throwing axe stats could be appropriate.

    Highest AC

The non-dragon CR 20 monsters are the pit fiend, balor, and tarrasque, which have a +30, +33, and +57 attack bonus. That's not very hard to defend against. Your initial build means that the fiends need a natural 20 to hit you, and the tarrasque is not supposed to ever get an attack roll against...

Strike of Righteous Vitality for a Warblade

It sounds fine to me. The ability to cast a 6th level spell under limited circumstances at 17th level doesn't sound over-powered to me. After all, if you actually wanted to use strike of righteous vitality every other round, you would be limited to attacking once per round instead of getting...

    Damage Reduction and Acid

The only things affected by damage reduction are attacks with weapons and natural weapons, so acid gets through DR just fine.

1st Level Wizard - What Spells Do You Take?

Protection from evil, grease, mage armor, mount, charm person, color spray, disguise self, and silent image are probably your best spells at 1st level. Later on, you'll want to pick up enlarge person, ray of enfeeblement, and feather fall.

Do your PCs spend money on non adventureing things?

My players are adventurers. They spend money on adventuring.

What's the game balance reason for needing a +1 weapon before enchanting further?

I don't think that there is, honestly. Compare flaming to a simple +1 enhancement bonus. If you're using a greatsword (and most people seem to be), a +1 enhancement bonus is simply better. You can use Power Attack to convert that +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls into a +3 bonus to damage...

    Deliberate balancing factor or coincidence?

The amulet of health (physical improvement) is in the "protection, discernment" slot, without a cost increase, so even WotC doesn't actually follow those guidelines. Using the guidelines for body slot affinities, the item should be a shirt of health, belt of health, or bracers of health, which...

    Deliberate balancing factor or coincidence?

Many magic items which one might wish to use at the same time use the same magic item slot. For example, a high-level cleric faces a tough choice between an amulet of natural armor, a periapt of wisdom, and an amulet of health. Is this a deliberate balancing factor, that is, characters are...

    The "Ultimate" Eldritch Blast??

A good way to increase eldritch blast damage is the Psionic Shot feat chain. Its rather feat-intensive (requiring Psionic Meditation, Psionic Shot, and Greater Psionic Shot), but it adds +4d6 points of damage to your blast. I played a Xeph warlock using those feats, and he was reasonably...
