D&D 5E (2014) Your favorite monsters to fight (or run)?

I'm a Hag Guy. Seriously, it's become a joke in the games that I run that EVERY female NPC they have contact with is a disguised hag. (I know they can be and disguise themselves as male as well, but in my campaigns they just aren't and don't. Well, not yet anyway.) Just started a Witchlight...

    D&D 5E (2014) Darkvision and Magical Darkness

Not to derail with a tangent, but I had NO idea this is how JC had "ruled." Yikes! Wouldn't it just be easier to say that Imp Inv can't be overcome by any spell under 4th level or something?

    D&D 5E (2024) How will WOTC monetize One D&D?

Sure they will. They will mock them for being cheap.

D&D 5E (2024) Alternate Alert 1st-level feat: Help me choose

Starting a new campaign and including some elements of 1DnD in order to test drive them. Every PC will start with a 1st-level feat but I'm not wild about the "initiative swap" option for Alert conceptually or practically (swapping initiative in Roll20 is annoying). The PHB Alert feat (does...

D&D 5E (2024) What do you think of the new rules for preparing spells?

I think it would be fine IF (and that's a big IF, literally and figuratively) spells get more consistent and interesting upcasting options. So yeah you have to learn a bunch of 1st level spells but they are worth casting using 3rd level slots.

D&D 5E (2014) What is REALLY wrong with the Wizard? (+)

I was just going to say this. If one agrees with the martial/caster power gap concern (and not everyone does), having more "combat" cantrips that briefly hinder an opponent (or briefly enhance a teammate, but let's put a pin in that for now because I would like to see clerics get those) allows...

How about "Hey kid, get off my lawn!"?

    D&D 5E (2024) Cleric Playtest Summary

This 100%. Reading through the rest of the thread, this fixes both the narrative (what is a cleric without a Holy Order?) and the practical (what equipment do I need?) complaints people are airing.

D&D 5E (2014) Companion thread to 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part XV: The FINAL ROUND)

Right? My opinion on the finalists runs from "meh" to "seriously??" Half full glass: with a 50 point start this will go on forever which is one less thread for weeks to distract me as I'm getting ready (read: already late) for work every morning.

    D&D 5E (2024) Monk Playtest

Wow, I thought my only issue with the Monk was over-reliance on Stunning Strike. But I agree with all of this and hadn't thought of most of it. I actually copied it into my "house rules" Google Drive folder. Dodge as a reaction just...makes SO much more sense. And why not proficiency bonus to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Companion thread to 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part X: Sorcerers)

How about a "nature sorcerer" (terrible name) origin feature that allows spending sorcery points to negate the need to concentrate on a spell from the druid list? Maybe SP = spell level, can only have one active at a time.

    D&D 5E (2024) Bard Playtest discussion

Sorry if this is a bit tangential but... I'm not a fan. But then I don't see how I could have been given that 1D&D "isn't a new edition" and "will be 100% backwards compatible." Bard is my favorite class to play, but whenever I'm playing one I wish I had fewer spells and more cool bard stuff...

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D origins playtest survey is live

Why not just a flat damage bonus on a crit? That's the easiest solution.

D&D General New WOTC racism allegations regarding Hadozee and Spelljammer

You're right, I overstated it to make a point. Let's just say "there are plenty of noncontroversial animals, choose one or a hundred of those." I mean, at least Star Trek got it right with the Ferengi, right? Right?? (OMG I am OBVIOUSLY kidding, please don't flame me!!)

D&D General New WOTC racism allegations regarding Hadozee and Spelljammer

No it just needs to not be approached. The game doesn't need slavery. Or rape. "But it's historically accurate." So are lots of terrible things that don't need to be in a fantasy game. D&D isn't a history text. It doesn't need this crap. And no monkey/ape people. Just don't. How is that ever...

D&D 5E (2014) SJ Ship to Ship Battles (& Vehicle Rules in General)

THIS! Thank you! Was trying to think of a system that is: 1) pretty simple; 2) approximates situations that already exist in 5e; 3) has an element of randomness to it ("targeting" a single individual with what is basically a catapult hurt my skullmeat, and I'm not even that wedded to realism).

    D&D 5E (2024) Postmortem: 10 Ideas in 5e that didn't quite work...

A thousand times yes! A "specialist" wizard should be strongly incentized to actually cast the spells from their school, whether by making the spells more effective, additional effects, more interesting abilities that recharge when a school-spell is cast, access to metamagic that can only be...

D&D 5E (2024) Make the most outrageous claim about One

I am so glad they finally adopted the Star Trek character design for half races: Just be exactly like one of the races and add pointy ears.

Spelljammer Dark Sun confirmed? Or, the mysterious case of the dissappearing Spelljammer article...

Wait...was that intended to be punny?? 'Cuz I'm loving it! Edit: damn, Bolares beat me to it and was funnier.

D&D 5E (2014) What mechanic/feature/etc. would you like to see more utilized in 5E?

Other uses for all dice pools/limited use "points": hit dice, sneak attack dice, spell points. In my games I have a tendency to give characters new abilities in addition to (and often in place of) magic items, and these often key off other limited resource mechanics. ESPECIALLY spell points for...
