    D&D 5E (2014) Odd character creations

I've never quite understood the desire to play an evil character. Considering the premise of the game is slanted towards heroic adventure, playing evil seems like you're just begging to be "that guy" who's going to disrupt the game and make sessions less fun for everybody else.

D&D 5E (2014) Higher Level Versions of Existing Spells

If it's a damage or healing spell, also consider a dice reduction as part of the re-balancing. As an example, look at Cure Wounds vs. Healing Word. Both 1st-level spells, but Healing Word is d4-based instead of d8 in exchange for being able to cast it as a Bonus Action. Is there a specific...

D&D 5E (2014) Confused about rules of combat

If you look at each monster's stats in the Monster Manual, it will describe each type of attack that monster can make, what their to-hit bonus is for that attack, and what the damage roll for that attack will be. It also lists their basic stats so the DM can roll ability/skill checks for them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Circle of Death?

I'm assuming the "Death" refers to the fact that it deals Necrotic damage. And yes the damage isn't as high as other spells at 6th level, but the radius is HUGE. It's got a 60' radius, compared to only 20' for a Fireball. Circle Of Death may not be great for small groups of heavies, but for...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Skills, what's the point?

Maybe it's because I was out of the game for so long and missed a lot of the evolution of skill checks & the like within D&D, but I happen to like the current system quite a bit. I like tying them to ability scores, so that someone with a high enough Charisma for example would have some natural...

D&D 5E (2014) Does Darkness the spell dispel Faerie Fire?

I'm not sure what you're actually saying here, your post was a bit convoluted. The Sage Advice ruling is spot-on. What it's saying is that the dispel effect that's part of the Darkness spell is a non-scaling effect, it is independent of the level the Darkness spell is cast at. That's plain from...

D&D 5E (2014) Does Darkness the spell dispel Faerie Fire?

As for the first part, I'd say yeah it'd be like seeing a bright outline against a dark background. The "you have advantage on attacks" feature still makes sense, because they stick out like a sore thumb in such a high-contrast environment. :) As for the 2nd part, I dunno. If the Darkness field...

D&D 5E (2014) Does Darkness the spell dispel Faerie Fire?

Yes, though if the Darkness was cast as an innate ability, such as the racial abilities of the Drow or Tiefling, those act as if cast at their lowest possible level. So in the original example, if the Drow is "casting Darkness" as his racial ability, then a 3rd-level Faerie Fire wouldn't be...

D&D 5E (2014) Does Darkness the spell dispel Faerie Fire?

What that also suggests to me however, is that if a Level 5 Archfey Warlock were to cast Faerie Fire, then Darkness wouldn't dispel it. At Warlock 5, his Pact Magic spell slots are all 3rd level. The same would apply to anyone else casting Faerie Fire using a spell slot of Level 3 or higher...

D&D 5E (2014) Tempest Domain Cleric of Deep Sashelas

Ultimately, unless you're in some kind of organized play like Adventurers League, then the short answer to just about any discrepancy is "Check with the DM". The books are the books, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with house rules, the books even suggest optional alternative rules for...

    D&D 5E (2014) MPMB's D&D 5e Character Tools

It sounds like what your group needs is a way for the DM to reference everyone's passive scores quickly, not the players. The players can get their passive score easily by simply assuming a roll of 10 and adding their modifier. What the DM needs is a way to quickly see which players meet the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Explainable multiclassing

I haven't been a DM in a long time, I'm just a player these days. But for me, I'd want the players to have at least some in-story reasoning for the decision to multiclass, it should be about more than just Frankensteining together the abilities they want. The simple question the player should be...

Upated to V2 - Fighter Archetype, Ancient Legionary

5th Edition doesn't necessarily run the way 3.5 did, so I wouldn't make that assumption. 5th edition class abilities that have limited uses by and large will reset their counters at rest intervals(some at a short or long rest, some at a long rest only which basically means per day), that's how...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Would I Play a Ranger?

Yeah, that's the only way it works, if the Ranger takes the Crossbow Expert feat which lets them ignore the loading quality of the Heavy Crossbow. Of course, that means either being a Human(variant) or delaying getting your Dex up to 20.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why do you multiclass?

I'm multi-classing Fighter/Rogue at the moment. I had started intending to run a straight archery-based Fighter, but then dipped into Rogue to boost my skills as the "sneaky" one of our group, as it was something we were lacking. Getting that Expertise in Stealth and Thieves' Tools has helped me...

Upated to V2 - Fighter Archetype, Ancient Legionary

Taking another look at this, I would agree with Connorsrpg's suggestion that the process of swapping which stances are "readied" should be during a Short/Long Rest. That lines up better with other classes/archetypes, and fits better within the 5th Edition style. Plus, for some reason I had...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighter: Feat / ability score decisions.

Also keep in mind that several of the Battlemaster's maneuvers involve the target making a saving throw, with either your Strength or Dexterity used to determine the DC. In your case I'm assuming Strength, so you'll want to max that out fairly quickly, possibly prioritizing it over feat selection.

    D&D 5E (2014) MPMB's D&D 5e Character Tools

Forgive me if the answer to this is buried somewhere in this massive thread, but I did try searching it and couldn't find the information. I just downloaded version 9.5 of this character sheet and tried importing my character's info from a previous version via .fdf file. When I did, the...
