    Just how compatible is Essentials?

Just wondering, but when will criticisms of 4e stop being referred to as "whining" or "gnashing of teeth" or whatever? Because this would be a much more interested thread if people didn't come off as so emotionally invested in squashing any dissent in their own beliefs and opinions. Back on...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

Although you can definitely play a game with both E and pre-E characters, I agree that its not a seamless fit. In some ways, there's terrific synergy--a pre-E Warlord giving a Slayer additional MBAs? Love that. But other features aren't melding so well, which can be chalked up to the size of...

Blasts from the past: original jester class and Kim Mohan interview

There is no evidence that your first statement is true. In fact, with over 3 million Kindles sold, over 3 million iPads, and dozens of other e-readers on the market, I would say that digital magazines that can be downloaded and read on the go and offline are a terrific wagon to hitch to.

Blasts from the past: original jester class and Kim Mohan interview

Oh, please. You're now the final arbiter of which formats are more useful for everyone else? Digital media is a lot of things to a lot of people. Some folks like to read things online, and some folks take their digital magazines and books with them offline to read wherever and whenever they...

Blasts from the past: original jester class and Kim Mohan interview

Doesn't seem to me like anyone is saying digital media and paper media are functionally interchangeable, or that websites are like magazines. Sounds more like folks are saying a paper magazine and digital magazine should resemble...well, magazines. In other words, the word "magazine" has a...

Blasts from the past: original jester class and Kim Mohan interview

Right. And when you go into a magazine store, you must walk out with a stack of ripped out pages, right? 'Cause who wants all those useless pages around the articles you want to read?

What's the big deal with "feat taxes?"

Sorry for continuing this line of discussion, everyone, but GM, half of the things on your list could work as houserules with the correct implementation, or in an appropriate campaign. What you're describing is a DM problem (or problems)--not a problem with the concept or practice of houseruling.

What's the big deal with "feat taxes?"

37 years of D&D, in all its incarnations, disagrees with you.

I have to agree that this being the case, it is not a magazine. How difficult is it to compile a multi-page pdf, for goodness sake?

    Essentials staff fighting slayer?

There you go. And p.s., small characters not being able to use appropriately sized polearms is a bug, not a feature, and should be fixed. Whole towns of halflings living in a points of light world, and they would only use weapons manufactured for medium sized characters? There are no smart...

What's the big deal with "feat taxes?"

From my experience, that may be true for Defenders and Strikers. But for high initiative Controllers and especially your Leaders, who you're counting on to provide some of those "other bonuses"? The benefits of Expertise for those folks are too significant to ignore.

Characters that can only hit one defense

So I'm trying out a couple Slayer characters in the CB--a halfling quarterstaff user, and a half-elf fullblade user--and as I was trying to choose the half-elf's dilletante power I realized Slayers could only target AC. This makes me a little nervous. I played a Battlecleric of Tempus for...

    Essentials staff fighting slayer?

I'm currently working on a halfling staff slayer in the CB. I maxed his Dex, and at 11th lvl, with Stout-handed staff, Mark of Storm, Staff Expertise, and Melee training (dex) with a +3 Thundergod staff he's getting +19 to hit at reach 2 for 1d8+18 dmg, (there are some items in play here as...

What's the big deal with "feat taxes?"

Yeah, I get you, and to some extent, I agree. There are a lot of opportunities for increasing 'to hit' probability, and they're always changing in a fun, dynamic way. But taking a consistent attack boost in 4e is always going to be the better choice than taking--or relying on--situational...

What's the big deal with "feat taxes?"

I completely disagree. Mechanics matter. Powerful Charge is a wash, since its just a damage boost, but in cases where a feat buffs the attack roll, believe me, it matters. A player is going to have a tough time RP-ing her "Death Dealer" fighter if she needs a 15+ to hit. "Die, and return to...

What's the big deal with "feat taxes?"

Interesting--you admit that getting +1 to all attacks is logically better than getting +1 to some attacks, but you also think that the inferior choice isn't less valid? How could it not be? Besides, Expertise feats are a tax because they're needed to keep the characters hitting at an average...

    D&D 4E The "We Can't Roleplay" in 4E Argument

I find this so interesting, because I see 4e as much more codified (the power system), shifting away from a more free-form DM fiat zone, which is how I perceive 3.5. Perfect example of YMMV, that.

    D&D 4E The "We Can't Roleplay" in 4E Argument

Of course 4e is conducive to RP, just as every other edition of D&D, including Pathfinder. However, I think some people more familiar with 3.5 look at the combat powers system, see that characters choose their attacks from a preset list, (most of which cannot be used more than once), and...
