    Excerpt: skill challenges

I find it notable that none of your scenarios involves immunity to intimidation. Its all role-playing. Thats the point. The immunity discourages role-playing and just going with die rolls coupled with arbitrary limits, rather than dealing with the consequences of the players' actions.

    Some crunch from Rich Baker

Not balance, bad design. Just as it was in 3rd edition with turn undead, and the cleric with favored enemy. If the DM (essentially) decides when you can use your class features it easily turns into something that over or under valued (or compensated for), even if by accident. Other class...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

Meh. For me, its just a blind game of rock-paper-scissors taking the place of actual role-playing. I'm not comfortable with But Thou Must/ You Just Can't situations... its crappy in video games, but its inexcusable in PnP games. Its a lazy GM cheat to force players to adhere to the monograph...

    Some crunch from Rich Baker

Have an option to swap it out for one of those feats? I know I'd much rather have Power of the Sun (Amaunator, for those who do like setting specific fluff spoon-fed to them), than turn undead, unless the campaign was designed to be undead heavy.

It isn't really an either/or situation though. Most people won't have trouble with the concept that you can't use Endurance to 'out-wait' the duke into aiding you, or not being able to Bluff a boulder out of the mine shaft, but that doesn't justify taking social skills out of a social...

Yeah, but those things look like they're slowly picking their way across the Generic Blasted Landscape. As Generic Bug Aliens often do.

    Excerpt: skill challenges

I'm puzzled by the distinction between NPC and DMC. All NPCs are run by the DM, so... As for the intimidate... I really dislike being told that a) something that isn't actually physically impossible is impossible. (can't turn myself inside out? Fine with that. This guy can't be talked to a...

Thats... uh... fine. However he wasn't asking about any of that. He was asking about this specific subsystem of 4e and getting a bunch of answers that amounted to 'Well, *I* wouldn't do it that way, so you can't.' I just figured someone ought to address his actual question rather than...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

You might. But there isn't any indication given that the core rules have that expectation. He is quite correct that you could run the skill challenges, as presented, as a series of 8-10 dice rolls in under 60 seconds. So, Jasperak, in answer to your original question, Yes, you can handwave...

I disagree. Its still wrong. This thing is less connected to a wolf than I am.

price of H1 Keep on the Shadowfell

It was my understanding that the rules preview would be eating into the adventure page count. Not that there would be additional pages.

    Excerpt: skill challenges

It might, if you do it right. Sure, it can have repercussions down the road, but the idea that you can't do it at all is fairly ridiculous. There is leverage you can apply to force help out of someone. If they send someone after you later, well, thats all part of the game. Its funny, if they...

    Excerpt: skill challenges

Actually the example annoys me specifically for that Intimidate prohibition. Why? Why is this guy immune to getting leaned on? Offer to feed him to your pet demon and he just laughs? Threaten his family, and he just responds with 'Go ahead'? It feels too artificial and just a quick band-aid...

Sadly, its an even worse abomination than the movie version, which I didn't really think anyone would actually try for. This is a bad thing. Eh. I just don't have any desire for wacky mutated dinosaur-beast things. Particularly not if they're masquerading as something as iconic as a worg...

    Whence two-weapon fighting?

Those 15 pages would be the powers and paragon paths. We've been shown the class and all the class features. All thats left is the optional choice material- powers and feats.

price of H1 Keep on the Shadowfell

Thats a pretty rough cost for half a module and a bare trickle of preview content. $20 would be high end for something this small, let alone $30. One more reason to pass on the module line, I guess.

    D&D 4E Piracy and 4e

Piracy was a big problem in 3e. The quest for gold=items=power meant that players were reluctant to spend money on a ship and go on high seas adventures. This meant that large numbers of pirate NPCs were free to roam the seas, plundering at will. It also meant few PCs turned pirate, which...

    New Monster Swordwing!

Keep going. You're hitting every monster on my list of 'things to throw in the trash' It irritates me that I went through 3rd editions MM I, II and III and the fiend folio and found about 250 usable monsters. Thats about the number of monsters in one of those books. I'd rather that didn't...

    D&D 4E Is 4E retro?

This is absolutely and utterly wrong. It may be true for you, but it doesn't match my experience at all. From the day I picked up the red box, hit points mattered. And yes, at times I've tracked and counted them, as have most of the groups I've played with. It often meant the difference...

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

I think just saying No is easier. Alternately, (and this is what I plan to do with the tiefling): rip out all the fluff and description and use the mechanics (maybe slightly tweaked). They're almost perfect for a group in my campaign- a group of humans that are withdrawn and isolated from the...
