D&D 4E DnD 4e Previews...What Would You Like To See?

Rituals Skill challenges A random smattering of powers from various classes and tiers. Like say Star Pact warlocks, levels 1 to 30? :)

I really don't like the white dragon. 1- it looks like an albino griffin, not a dragon 2- the wings. The giant hunchback to connect them to the body looks really odd. If the body were a bit longer and they actually connected to the sides, rather than the top, it wouldn't look quite so...

    D&D 4E Is 4E retro?

No idea. They could be anywhere from (null) to Con + some semi-random number based on what role you think they are. The system seems to support either option. I'd rather it was consistent and just ditch the minion idea (except for appropriate things... rats could have 1 hit point). But...

    New Monster Swordwing!

"Stop stabbing me then"! Agreed, these things are boring on about every level. Ooo Bugs that totally stab people! And... thats all. But wait, they're humanoid bugs with swords for arms that makes them totally awesome, right? ... No it does not. Maybe these things are the fodder of...

    Excerpt: Racial Benefits

Yeah, not a fan of the situational modifiers either. Since quite a few are auras as well, its a serious pain. Given how clumsy this was in 3rd edition, I do not understand why they chose to inflict it on us again. I'm glad they didn't go with 'racial levels' though. Those were incredibly...

    D&D 4E Is 4E retro?

I can see where you're coming from on your other points but this one stands out. The 1st level Human Guard is a respectable combatant with a solid attack bonus, good to very good damage, some useful effects and hit points between a striker and a defender. While any given PC is almost certainly...

D&D 4E 4e Multiclassing and Characters from Fiction

Useless? And even more useless? :D I'm always hesitant about this kind of experiment. D&D doesn't really translate directly to books very well. It works in a constructed gameworld that is built on D&D logic, but it doesn't work too well on books that aren't relying on that same logic.

Until the novelists got a hold of it and turned it into 'what happens when the Hobbits win'.

Honestly the best thing you can do for a 4e [out of print setting] is use the old material with the new rules. Someone updating it is 90% likely to be upsetting.

    Feat progrression

How do you mean? You start with 1 encounter power known, and gradually gain multiple ones. You keep that power until much later, when you can replace it. It isn't really an error- you just keep what you learned for a long time.

Hickman is explicitly Mormon. Dragonlance is the closest thing to a 'Conversion Guide for Gamers' that I've ever seen. Take a look at the annotated chronicles with his side commentary. Its actually a bit on the creepy side, as the religious aspects are almost specifically a Mormon homily.

Doubtful. But they can offer a charred patch of crystal with a sign that says: 'Used to be Sembia, Fell to Blue Plague Fire, Year of Immolated Merchants'

    GameSpy Reviews D&D Insider

Thats... pretty much the point of Gamespy. Vague generalities and no real depth for your advertising dollar. The more you pay, the more positive their ads. Sorry, 'articles'.

Stupid fantasy. Or generic fantasy in some cases. Treants, orcs, halflings, etc. Because preferences are subjective. People like what they like. And if classic fantasy *was* fantasy, it still *is* fantasy. But the new stuff, which has entirely different feel, has to be something else...

Ah. I was hoping for a link of some sort. More of the precise and less of the 'he said, they said'.

Ugh. Maybe they should start theming the monster manuals. Classic fantasy, over the top fantasy, stupid fantasy, generic fantasy, not fantasy, etc...

Shazman, can you specify what they promised? You seem to have a precise idea of what it was, while I only seem to have a vague idea. Anyway. This subsystem (whether you feel it should be called multiclassing or not), doesn't strike me as 'weak and lazy'. Its definitely different from the 3rd...

Reminds me of the Space Gorilla army in Rackham's AT-43. Monkeys do, man, monkeys do. (And yes, I know. Apes. Monkies are just inherently more amusing).

Considering how poor both products were, I don't think you're going to get anything good, either way. For myself, I'm not really enthused or dismayed by this plan. Partly because I don't have much interest in their setting books or 'expanded material', but mostly because I don't think they're...

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

It isn't quite that simple, however. If you choose a power that functions better with your other choices (synergy) or uses a better stat than the other powers available to you (optimizing), you aren't making a suboptimal choice. Plus, given that powers do many, many different things, 'more...
