    Excerpt: Paragon paths (merged)

In 22 years of gaming, I have never sat down in advance and agreed on what the background 'lore' was. The DM was either running something out of a book, or had his own setting. It was never, ever a 'group setting' where various people sprayed their preferences across the landscape in order to...

    Excerpt: Paragon paths (merged)

Which is fine if you're playing by yourself. But in a group, whats in the book is the standard jargon for communication. If you all have your own special code for what specific names. feats and background you don't like, it quickly becomes a trainwreck. A gaming group doesn't have a hivemind...

    Excerpt: Paragon paths (merged)

No, please, not the 'We're so Politically Correct everything has been whirled in a blender until its all bland and flavorless'. There are different flavors of fantasy, and Vikings vs. Samurai vs Saracens vs Pirates vs. Cowboys doesn't hold a lot of appeal, even though I like everything but the...

D&D 4E 4e, Gleemax, and DDI info from GAMA Trade Show

Well, a generic, homogenized and through americanized bland fantasy setting, which is really what he seems to be referring to.

Thats an odd assumption. What would it give you? You already have the class features...

    Excerpt: Paragon paths (merged)

Eh. Like most white wolf games, I find the setting interesting, at least until you get to the point of entropy rape demons and 'wild (wyld) = crazy, because we've added a y!', but ultimately the system is pretty terrible. But while it does the boy's fighting manga pretty well, it doesn't do...

    Excerpt: Paragon paths (merged)

Me too. Coupled with class training feats, I suspect thats the whole package. On another note, the Doomshaper is reinforcing certain images in my head. "In the name of the Zero Star, Saggitarrius, I, Sailor Galaxia, will punish you!" Yep, I can't shake the feeling that the warlock (and the...

    Excerpt: The Warlord

Actually... with everyone using the same progression, there isn't a reason for the warlord's attack bonus to be behind at all.

    Hybrid classes - lazy design?

This actually why I think hybrids are a bad idea. It's bad when they aren't good enough at any role, but its just as bad (for the rest of the party) when they can do your job just as well, and fall back on their other abilities when those are more advantageous. The question changes from 'Why...

    Excerpt: The Warlord

Odd. As a current history student, I can separate it from the modern, anachronistic meaning that doesn't have any relevance to the class, and use the classic, mythological and fantasy literature -inspired meaning without any problems. But I was always more interested in medieval and...

    Hybrid classes - lazy design?

I'd much rather they pick a role a stick with it. Even if the class can't do both roles simultaneously, it is better than a class stuck with one. If they want to make a shapeshifter defender, than they should do that. And just that. Like the rest of the classes there can be some useful and...

    Excerpt: The Warlord

And feat and racial. (from the feats article and elves article respectively) Overall, I like what this shows of the class (no forced skill choices, Woohoo) Disappointed by the lack of text on inspiring word and at-will powers, however. Combat Leader irks me a bit. I'm still not happy with...

From the GSL news post: What are Occupations?

Maybe its a justification to dump the craft and profession skils. If you have occupation: sailor, you don't have to worry about dumping perfectly good skill points in the trash to have a character who can steer a boat, in order to match his background.

Dungeon of Dread Starter - No roleplay stats

Really? Based on the packs (just a few) I've picked up over the years, its about what I expected. I was hoping the quality had gotten a bit better, but wasn't terribly shocked when they weren't that good. The new boosters are a bit better (I picked up two), but they're still quite sloppy.

    AD&D 1E Do you think 4e is d20 1e?

Most likely. The early days of 2nd edition were 95% identical to 1st. They just dropped in some spell damage caps, took out a few classes, and moved non-weapon proficiencies into the PH from the dungeoneer's and wilderness survival guides. Though they did leech most of the flavor out of the...

Dungeon of Dread Starter - No roleplay stats

Really? My dwarf's chin is the same color as his beard, and several areas of bronze fall off the lines and into the iron areas of armor. The sellsword's main weapon is solid gold all the way up, his spare is the same color as his pants and the leather strap on his back is grey like the 'fur'...

    MM excerpt: phane

Hmm. Well, I have to admit I like the 4e tactics, and what you can do in a battle far more than I liked it in 1st, 2nd or 3rd, even just based on the small sample of available info. But... I do think that solos and elites would be just as interesting without the HP inflation. They can do neat...

Dungeon of Dread Starter - No roleplay stats

The starter set has different packaging. The boosters are still just cardboard that some kid can tease open and slip the minis out of. The quality of the minis is still very poor, as well. I remain unimpressed by these things. The plastic is soft and weak, and the paint jobs are half-arsed...
