    D&D 4E 4E: BBEG's Redemption?

I did some of that, too. 700 xp encounters weren't really more challenging. The one that I tried and let spiral out of control and ended up being roughly 1000 xp, but it was offset by many of the monsters being undead. vulnerable radiant is a huge thing with a cleric in the party.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Nope. All the paladin powers we've seen require a melee weapon. Regarding the orignal question- yes, out of the 8 classes the only good (as in, better than some average shmoe) archer is the ranger. At least for now, the classes are shoehorned into strict, confining roles. The splatbooks may...

How many Tools do you Need?

That isn't common sense though. Its a personal preference that you don't use the rules as written a certain way (ie, 'power' exploits are bad, so people shouldn't do them, though this is a pretty trivial example of a power exploit). Furthermore, in this situation I'd say common sense supports...

    WotC_Shoe: He DM's, but his pc's don't fight!

Actually, the bone in question is the 4e skill/social/noncombat system that they've been touting so highly but not really talking about. Explaining the differences between 3e and 4e seemed the simplest way of getting some info, since I know they won't actually just spill the details of the system.

RPG stats for all Dungeons of Dread minis

I think continue and conclude indicate ongoing effects: first text happens when powers hits, continue happens on following round, conclude happens on round after that. For a fun conclusion, check the Bralani's Curse of Autumn: after 24 hours, target dies.

    D&D 4E Why I'm so excited for 4E!!

Indeed, that is what I said.

    D&D 4E 4E: BBEG's Redemption?

Well, not each time. But any given time. And I suspect a significant number of players will try to save them for a boss fight. Or at least, just before they have to rest anyway. However, just looking over the available monsters, I'm not sure thats true for other monsters at the upper end of...

House Rules: Using circular templates weaken classes?

Alternately, you could use hexes. They work pretty well with 4e.

    New Race balance poll.

There really isn't enough to compare it too, balance-wise, but in general it seems to veer wildly between things that are over the top and things that are useless. That generally doesn't balance out, by the way. Mechanically it comes across as a vehicle for exploiting pure speed and multiple...

    Where did the Talents go?

Board members largely assumed the existence of talents. Though to be fair, that was largely because of how heavily the idea that SW Saga was a preview of 4e was pushed.

D&D 4E My First 4E Game: Disappointing. Yours? (UPDATED with player feedback)

Do you know that this is one of the most reassuring things anyone has said about 4e, ever?

D&D 4E My First 4E Game: Disappointing. Yours? (UPDATED with player feedback)

While I'm still on the fence on 4e, I largely enjoyed the playtest I ran (other than the dragon, who was sad and lame), there is still quite a bit I don't like about 4e. But even as a confirmed doubter, I don't get the stuff about WoW (which I played for about 6 months). I'm trying and failing...

    D&D 4E 4E: BBEG's Redemption?

This is a new argument by me. If the encounter is level appropriate (ie, XP=600 or whatever), daily powers unbalance them? That doesn't seem right. The chuul also had some minions, but they didn't really matter. The interesting thing, was however, that the 1st level party could beat the snot...

The cavalier, poorly designed? Surely you jest! :)

    Martial Power: archetypal builds

On the other hand, the 4e classes seem really strict in their definitions. A rogue is a light bladesman, by default, and in a lot of ways, thats pretty much all he is. And a fighter is pretty much a heavy armor and weapons guy, if not defined as class features, its 'expected' he'll be wearing...

    Wizards Fall Catalogue

I just dislike the fact that its buried in the...muck... that is the new FR book, along with new powers for other classes. I'm going to sit down with that section of the book, flip through it for ideas, then toss it back on the shelves, because I'm not going to shell out $30 just for that, even...

    D&D 4E 4E: BBEG's Redemption?

As solos? No. My experience with the solo monster in the available 4e material has been very poor. After a flurry of activity the combat turned into a long, drawn out and extremely boring grind. That wasn't fun. Elites... eh. I'm not to keen on them either, particularly with the glimpse of...

    D&D 4E Why I'm so excited for 4E!!

Unfortunately, I don't think is going to be the case, as show cased by the Martial Power book blurb- new powers, feats and paths for fighter/ranger/rogue/warlord. I expect to see it with every power source. So eventually, possibly even within a year or two, the multiple book syndrom hits. PH I...

    New Dungeon Article

Indeed, I'm busy stuffing them in a very crowded rocket thats going to be shot directly into the sun. Along with drow, 90% of the humanoid races and 95% of the aberrations from the 3e days. 4e seems to be continuing the tradition that 3e set with monsters: 'Lets make the flumph look cool by...

    Wizards Fall Catalogue

WotC needs to seriously think about its price points. I'm not terribly enthused by any of these, and I don't know if I'll want a slew of new powers for half the classes after 3 months. I guess I'll flip through the martial and treasure books and see if there is enough worthwhile material to...
