Fireballs, Force Orbs, and Ranged Attacks

And of course, you're setting up a precedent for other powers to do the same thing. Thats potentially quite unbalancing. Stretching a non-AoE attack into one is an abuse of the rules, and its quite possible to break the game with it. By similar logic, you could target a door with otiluke's...

    WotC_Dave: Color Power!

You beat me. I was going to suggest highlighters.

    D&D 4E 4e requires a battlemat, and I'm okay with it

Having tried it out, I agree that a battlemat is rather necessary. You'd have to gut a lot of abilities to function without, on both monsters and players. On the up side, hexes do work without severely gimping folks. You have to finesse the definitions of push and pull slightly, but it isn't...

Warlock, Warlord, and other alternate classes

Given WotC's track record in balancing classes, we should all be very, very afraid. And I won't be surprised if track is just as much a general thing anyone can do as trapfinding is.

Warlock, Warlord, and other alternate classes

I was under the impression that very little lasts beyond the encounter, and what little that does last goes away with the 'extended rest'. On the warlock- he looks like he got a great deal. Strong attacks, utility stuff, defenses, good skill selection, the best spread for stat dependency...

Force Orb: Secondary attacks on a miss?

But if it works, and is effective, those 'rare' circumstances become common circumstances.

Force Orb: Secondary attacks on a miss?

See, this is the problem. The power is designed to do nothing if it misses, otherwise it *would* have a burst effect or a Miss: <blah, blah> entry. Not explode and have an effect anyway. Partly its a matter of once you open that door, you have to open to everything- does the fighter's...

    Beardless combat rules...

This would be funnier if 'beardy' didn't mean 'powergaming' in Wargaming circles. As it is, I'm just puzzled which point you're trying to make.

Different classes still get different HP: why?

Hp seem to be tied to role now. The closer you are expected to be to the melee line, the more HP you have. So, defenders have the most, and are supposed to attract attacks, then leaders (the warlord seems to be on the line with the fighter, and the cleric within 5 squares of the enemy)...

    Rodney Thompson on Multiclassing

So, OK. TerraDave also linked his blog here, http://www.gleemax.com/Comms/Pages/Communities/BlogPost.aspx?blogpostid=52008&pagemode=2&blogid=2100 about the economy of actions. This is really important, since its one of the main reasons the 3e fighter was so lackluster when compared to the full...

How D&D Was Saved and Made It To 4e

Oh, that isn't a problem for the audience. Its a potential problem for the company, since they aren't making money back on products that don't sell well.

    Concerned About Character Creation

To me though, now that we've finally seen most of it, it doesn't look the complicated <RP stuff: background, gender, history, etc> Stats ---same as it ever was Race ---adjust stats, skills, write down static bonuses and power (if any) Class ---bonuses/defenses ---write down class features...

    Rules clarifications

Dunno, from the kobolds and other sample monsters, you pretty much need the meta knowledge, because it seems pretty random.

D&D 4E What place does dual wielding have in 4E?

No it isn't. Raid shot (and a melee version) work like that. Dual wield is separate attack rolls for an additional attack, with feats that slowly negate the penalty.

I don;t even know what ditch you're talking about.

    Rules clarifications

It seems pretty good (and fairly obvious) against ranged attackers or spellcasters, who can attack you. But I suspect 4e is going to be fairly meta-transparent on the minions- you'll be able to tell, so bunch them up for the Wizard's fire blast.

    Rodney Thompson on Multiclassing

I'm not so sure about this. It could be just a matter of having an extra 4 levels to do it in. Nothing in the preview material, particularly the D&D XP material suggests that 4e will be any less about optimizing (on the mechanical side of things) than 3e was. It looks a bit easier, since you...

    Rules clarifications

My big problem with sleep is that it doesn't actually put people to sleep initially. They get to act, and then odds are they aren't affected by the sleep anyway. Anything that relies on the new saving throw mechanic is a pure gamble... in the enemies favor. For a big daily power, thats the...

    D&D 4E 4E at the printers...but we don't see it until June?

Uh. Well, yes, but that doesn't apply in this case. From all indications, the books went out to the printers late, not early. It takes time to print things. Especially, what, 100,000? copies? 250,000? between the three books? More? Printing on that scale takes time. They'll have to...

Joe Commoner, and his BIG AXE!!!

Maybe. But it should be noted that some folks developed some really specialized tools for killing cows. There are some bizarre instruments involving springs developed in the 18th century that essentially drive a spike into the animal's brain. It was basically a device to one shot a cow, rather...
