An Examination of Differences between Editions

From earliest days of D&D I don't think the standard has ever been that the PCs need to go adventuring. In a normal D&D game (any edition) by level 3 the PCs will have enough money to retire. Retirement was even expected (as someone else said on this thread) in previous editions at 10+ level. If...

This is true of majority of posts in these nostalgia threads (this current post of mine a case in point :p )

    - The STD you got from event #2 is mysteriously cured - You're offered an endorsement deal from an adventuring equipment firm. Free TorchLite(TM)-torches forever! - PalanTirV wants to do 'Cribs' on your castle. Hope you're not still living out of taverns. Polish the chrome wagon wheels and that...

    Classic D&D...

I don't tell my players the AC at first. Usually after a couple of rounds I might tell it to them to speed things up (since they've mostly pinpointed it themselves, considering which results hit and which don't).

QFT. Except that I went for WFRP. In hindsight I've realized that those rules were very arbitrary, although not as limiting, themself. I'd see no problem with introducing NPC PrC's, since there already are NPC classes. Anyway, I'd leave it up to the setting books to do this. There's too...

An Examination of Differences between Editions

Speaking of differences between editions, what does this tell about 1e? If these boards are to be believed, everyone houseruled a lot and nobody played by the same rules (which people say is how Gygax intended it - his stated opinion from that period saying the complete opposite notwithstanding...

Slowing Advancement and Other Arbitrary Restrictions

This is very quotable. Hmm .. I don't want to crowd my sig though :\ EDIT: I hope you don't mind me quoting you in my sig. That quote is something I game by

Why are Lycanthropes less virulent now?

I thought that a single bite can turn you a lucanthrope in 3E, if an (easy) save is failed. If it doesn't work that way, too bad for one of my players whose character has succumbed to it twice :heh: Anyway, it's surprisingly hard to remove once the initial period is gone, for low to mid level...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

This is not different from the DM selecting abilities for a magic sword he's going to place in an adventure, in 3E.

Greybeards & Grognards 2 "Who Dies" and My Life In Gaming Editions.

All I know is that my gut says maybe. Kidding aside, no it's not backwards compatible, and that's IMO good. I don't really even care if 4E is compatible with 3E or not. Every edition should stand on its own merits. If 4E is good enough, I'll buy it.

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

I'll point out at this .. um, point, that 3E can in someways keep that sense of wonder that comes from not knowing all the monsters, spells, effects, etc, for longer. Many people in this thread have said that when starting the game everything was wondrous, because you didn't know the spells, you...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

A system can be predictable - the DM using it doesn't have to. Rules and applying them are two different things. DM fiat exists always in greater or lesser quantities. That's the basis for many many D&D adventures, for example. The DM decides that there's some world destroying magic coming...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

Obviously, one flew over the cuckoos nest in your case :p 3E adventures by Dungeon and WotC include new magic items with non-standard effects. It's clearly possible within 3E. That quashes #3, because the items are outside of the creation rules in 3E. So you're still left with your awesome...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

Hyperboling tends to make claims false. So it's not going to help you show anything false, except your own logic.

An Examination of Differences between Editions

I still gather around with my friends, imagine a group of fantasy folk, venture into dangerous places, kill what we can and take what we find. For me that's the D&D experience. So I'd say the experience hasn't changed as much as for you. The mechanics are much better nowadays, and that makes...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

It would be a loss to the game if anyone who's ever DMed a game could no longer function as a player. 60% of my current group do both.

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

Nobody's saying that. Just that most of magic has always been predictable. There has always been a list of spells - with complete effects listed that are quite predictable. There are a couple of exceptions, like Wish and Limited Wish (and Miracle in 3E). There has always been a similar list in...
