Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

That was about the first item that got booted from my campaign. Not very good design - do we really need to take away all the advantages of sword & board fighters? They're inferior as is, and that floating shield would just kill the concept. Decision like that doesn't really require, IMO, that...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

Except that's not what you're doing. You're generalizing one instance to characterize the whole, and I'm pointing out that your one example is the exception (potion miscability table -> magic in 1E was unpredictable is your claim, I'm saying it's the exception compared to 99% of items / item...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

Now don't be silly. It's called magical because it doesn't work in an anti-magic field.

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

You seem to have quoted me out of context. I know your claim, and addressed that in the second part of my post. You shouldn't claim magic to be unpredictable if only 1% of items (it's probably less than 1%, actually) are somewhat unpredictable. How does this claimed unpredictability of magic...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

Well, 3E has about the same amount of random (unpredictable) magic items that 1E has, so I don't see your claim about 1E magic more unpredictable by nature as having much basis. 3E has the wan.. sorry, rod of wonder, deck of many things, etc .. where you have to roll on a table. Whoop-dee-doo...

An Examination of Differences between Editions

I'm confused .. I thought we were talking about ToEE. I don't know about B2 .. unless that is ToEE ;) Disregard. Well, I don't think 1st level parties shouldn't have less access to cartloads of treasure anyway. But if they do, I think finding guards for the cart would be no problem...

An Examination of Differences between Editions

I might be wrong, but by my memory it did. People called out this "1e fact" that much of the treasure was well hidden. IIRC Quasqueton replied that only a tiny minority was. About the identification, I dunno .. sounds a bit incredible that a major factor in treasure gaining was throwing away /...

An Examination of Differences between Editions

There was a great analysis of ToEE by Quasqueton - the treasure amounts, XP amounts, etc.. The conclusion is that there's Monty Haulish amounts of coin just in the adventure itself, not hidden in peasants homes or in difficult places.

WotC mistakes that cause you headaches -

Your #1 gripe happens in 1/20th of the situations where the save DC is so low that only an 1 fails? That doesn't sound like too common. Bardic healing has caused balance problems and/or player confusion? Eh, sorry, but if these two made your top 5 list, seems to me that the WotC errors...

Do Magic Item "Shops" wreck the spirit of D&D?

It's a nice thing as a DM to see the players battling with their inner greed when deciding if they really want to sell that Ultimate Blackguard Ensemble they've just recovered

    Dennis Rodman Monsters

Can snatch, unless of course someone has freedom of movement (+20 to grapple IIRC). Once the grapple succeeds, there are still rest of the adventurers to deal with. Depending on the situation, being considered grappled might open the dragon to a world of hurt (like, if there's an order of the...

    Dennis Rodman Monsters

Not necessarily. When my players confronted a great wyrm red dragon they were prepared with energy immunity spells (and bunch of other boosting spells) and one cleric was casting mass heals almost every round. The problem with big baddies is that there's just one of them (means one action per...

Because the PCs would get killed if they encountered what's inside before that? It also implies an unhealthy attitude that a DM shouldn't challenge PCs in a way that combat certainly leads into death. Luckily this was fixed with the EL/CR distribution tables in 3E. In any case, I found it a bit...

An Examination of Differences between Editions

The Red Box D&D (is that BD&D?) included an adventure, a keep for the PCs to romp through, and the DM to learn the game. It included a room with two harpies in it. The door to the room was unopenable by characters less than 3rd experience level. That is an antithesis of non-scaled design. I...

IMO they should. Two of my players have run D&D campaigns for first time in their life with 3E. The CR system made it possible that it wasn't trial and error. They managed to run 13 and 10 level campaigns without a hitch, and I think that was due to 3E CR/EL system. People like to rag on the...

How to Make D&D Accessible to the Non-Mathematically Inclined?

I actually agree with Paticle_man. How important is it to have exact math in the game? Personally I just went the way of only correcting players in the worse direction. If they call a result, and have forgotten to add bonuses, the result sticks. If they've forgotten negative modifiers, I...

Prep work? What stinking prep work?

Actually one of the reasons I started with 3E was to have decent support for my game of choice. I had just had two RPGs die on me (Traveller TNE & Hogshead WFRP), so it was a big thing to get to run some pre-made adventures. In early 3.0E I created adventures myself, but nowadays I enjoy running...
