D&D 5E (2014) Is Anyone Using Variant Encumbrance?

I just rule most used mundane items doesn't sell or at best sell for a 1/5th book price. That really cuts down on players trying to haul too much back. Treasure and valuable commodities of course sell for full.

    D&D 5E (2014) Druid's Wild Shape

Thing is, while it balances out supposedly in the long run it can be very powerful to broken for a long stretch of levels, out fights the main combatants and it certainly attracts Character Optimizer types. It is on wotc's watch list for potential errata. You would not be the first who's altered...

D&D 5E (2014) Meteor Swarm Vs. All other spells & DMG's spell creation guidelines

Monster Manual p. 342 Customizing NPCs. While it calls out both changing weapons and adding magic items can adjust CR due to damage paramaters... This is on the page opposite the smug looking CR 12 archmage who can cast 9th level spells. That also seems to me kinda out of line with the rest of...

D&D 5E (2014) Meteor Swarm Vs. All other spells & DMG's spell creation guidelines

No, it's quite clear that changing the spells on an NPC caster for the same class spells and same level of spell = same CR and thus same XP. On the other hand, I'm kinda thinking that perhaps that line about swapping spells was ALSO written before they changed thedesign paradigm on 9th level spells.

D&D 5E (2014) Meteor Swarm Vs. All other spells & DMG's spell creation guidelines

I can only guess the spell scaling rules along with the spell creation guidelines were written BEFORE they made the call to reduce high level spells to 1 per day. It just feels like there was a extreme disconnect when boosting Delayed blast fireball from 7th to 9th level only bumps the damage...

D&D 5E (2014) Meteor Swarm Vs. All other spells & DMG's spell creation guidelines

Redacting what I had typed, after I noticed this issue was brought up to Mearls... https://twitter.com/mikemearls/status/489205748853776384 So it does look like the guidelines are worthless for 9th level. Sure hope PCs can handle a 40d6 meteor from an enemy Archmage after hitting 12th level...

D&D 5E (2014) The curious case of the double-dragon sorcerer

Dragons in my campaign are not very pure blooded, so while dragonborn have to echo the ancient archtypes, it's feasable an old bloodline in the dragon's lineage might reawaken. A copper dragonborn mixing blood with an Ebony Copper dragon, still might wind up with a Copper Dragonborn child that...

D&D 5E (2014) Meteor Swarm Vs. All other spells & DMG's spell creation guidelines

While the subject of expanding the game's spell selection to round out the various energy damage types, I realized just how out of sync Meteor Swarm's damage is when compared to the DMG's spell creation guidelines and in fact ALL other spells. Ignoring it's huge range and area, it deals 20d6...

D&D 5E (2014) The free online crunch: I don't think it's going to be as much as we think it is.

D&D Spells have always been lopsided to fire, especially since several major boss-type are immune or resistant to it. Given that there are DMG rules for making new spells, a DM who desires to add in spells to other elements has the ability to. Now If someone feels that to be "viable" an element...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can a PC perform a miracle with a stat/skill check?

it's a one in 10000 chance to get matching % rolls.

    D&D 5E (2014) Can a PC perform a miracle with a stat/skill check?

I'd say unless the fighter's passive WIS check is less than 8, the fighter understands know that the commoner is better off if the fighter tries to stabilize the commoner by hand while praying with his mouth. Act, should the gods care, so will they.

D&D 5E (2014) What is my best bet for some cheap, decent miniatures?

Wotc's plastic was supertough, even compared to other Prepaints. More a rubbery plastic like Reaper's Legendary Encounters. Also they used the same plastic for most of the bases so they could be integral bases. I think they also try for single piece construction. Wizkids makes their bases out...

D&D 5E (2014) The free online crunch: I don't think it's going to be as much as we think it is.

Maybe it's for the best, a ruleset should stand on it's own two feet without needing a crutch of excess material. Now if Wotc takes so long folks have been through more than a couple level 1 to 20 campaigns before anything new has been released, perhaps then some new material might be overdue.

    D&D 5E (2014) magic items prices

DMG notes that it might be possible to find them for sale in cities large enough to have Magic Academies or Major Temples, but the book also mentions it's likely an an invite only market and likely to attract thieves.

D&D 5E (2014) What is my best bet for some cheap, decent miniatures?

Some are sorta close, but many humans will look kinda big when rebased. Ones that look like large monsters work fine for that. Rebasing them isn't too hard for most figs. CAREFULLY Cut the base off with a X-acto blade or razor saw, Super glue to a 1' base for medium or a 1.5" / 40mm poker chip...

    D&D 5E (2014) On Orcish Grandmothers (=poor spells)

For Mordenkainen's Sword, when I'm running, I'll probably let the attack apply to all foes the sword is in reach of. But when I run, I believe in a target rich environment so for other DMs' games, that might not be so useful.

D&D 5E (2014) What is my best bet for some cheap, decent miniatures?

It was a 'Rare Huge', effectively a chase rare. That level of rarity only showed up in 1/3 of boosters in the set IIRC which dramatically increased the secondary market value of those pieces. Top it off with hydras being underrepresented in fantasy figures and it a pretty decent mini in it's own...
