D&D 5E (2014) Is Duellist style too good without feats.

Against 15 AC, to completely negate the -5 you would need to achieve a +18 to hit (because 1 misses regardless, so if after -5 you still hit on a 2, it didn't do anything). Archery gives you +2, Bless gives you another +2.5. You would need a +13 or so before archery style to completely negate...

Not if you're comparing against boosting your DEX mod, since that gives you a flat +1/+1.

    Help with two characters

It's one I've never played myself, though I've been in a lot of parties where other people were playing them. I don't love what they got in that variant article though. Seems weaker than most of the other classes.

No, it doesn't. Because you can get the +2 from archery style with or without SS. However, if your target would have had half cover, then relative to someone who takes a DEX bump with their ASI, the feat gives you a choice between +1/-1, or -4/+9.

Yeah, I was also thinking about Wood Elf Monk.

D&D 5E (2014) Tips for running White Plume Mountain's final encounter?

As for building Keraptis, I used a modified version of Halaster from Mad Mage. He's listed as CR 23, which on paper looks way too high for six level 8 characters, but (a) he was solo (not counting the Simulacrum, but that was his 9th level slot), (b) they had good magic items, including the...

D&D 5E (2014) Tips for running White Plume Mountain's final encounter?

Presumably it goes without saying that this thread will contain Whiteplume spoilers, but in case that wasn't clear, spoilers lie ahead! I ran Whiteplume recently as a self-contained adventure (took them 8 or 9 sessions to get through --- my group is extremely thorough) with a group that was...

    D&D 5E (2014) Natural Weapons discrepancies?

Looking at the beasts in the MM that have DEX higher than STR (which are the only cases where it's possible to distinguish whether their natural weapons are treated as having something equivalent to the finesse property), it seems to me that most., maybe all, of the DEX-based natural weapon...

    D&D 5E (2014) Natural Weapons discrepancies?

The dire wolf's stat block is perfectly consistent with their natural weapon attack having the finesse property. A rogue who has higher STR than DEX can still choose to use STR for their finesse weapon attacks; and they will, since they're better that way. As to why wolves' natural weapons have...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Duellist style too good without feats.

Yeah, most of the rest of the numbers seem to check out, but that one seems way off to me. I get a 17% increase in DPR gained by using the TWF style, compared to using TWF without the style. Of course, I also don't think that's the best measure to use, since the alternative to using TWF with TWF...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Duellist style too good without feats.

I mostly agree... People tend to overrate the -5/+10 feats by failing to make apples-to-apples comparisons. At worst, they ignore the -5 part completely. One step above that they hand wave the -5 by saying that you can simply "offset" it (with advantage, or with archery style, etc.), failing to...

    Help with two characters

If you've never played a bard, you can take them in a lot of different directions, and they benefit nicely from good stats (not that anyone doesn't, but they can be either MAD or feat-hungry depending on concept)... Some ideas: 1. Build a lore bard and use the spare feat space to shore up...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Duellist style too good without feats.

But I would see it as a good thing if, as a result of you having protection style, the monster attacked you instead of attacking the person next to you. Very likely as a martial character with a shield you have higher AC than they do; maybe much higher (probably higher HP too, making you better...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Duellist style too good without feats.

I think @Helldritch was saying you'd have two attacks with disadvantage when you combine Vicious Mockery and Protection style. VM can only apply to the first attack, but protection can apply to whichever you choose. Which is true, but an action and a reaction to achieve that is a steep price.

D&D 5E (2014) Is Duellist style too good without feats.

It's just fine at low levels; the problem is the scaling. When monster DPR scales primarily through the number of attacks they make rather than the damage per hit you're stuck preventing about the same amount of damage against multiattack monsters as you prevent against single attack monsters...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Duellist style too good without feats.

If you don't let duelist work with a shield then it becomes strictly for DEX rapier builds, since for a STR build it would be strictly worse than using a two-handed weapon.

    D&D 5E (2014) Natural Weapons discrepancies?

Are there instances of monsters using two weapon fighting that have multiattack and also separate bonus actions they can use? If not it's equivalent to just saying they have the TWF fighting style, but simpler to manage as a DM than treating one of the attacks as a bonus action.

D&D 5E (2014) Making Thrown Weapon Attacks Melee Attacks

I don't necessarily think the feat would become a must-have, but it would certainly introduce a powerful option that wasn't there before. I agree that it's probably good that thrown attacks stick to one or the other, and don't get the benefits of both melee and ranged attacks at the same time.
