Would Paizo Make a Better Steward for Our Hobby?

    A) Can't open the beginner box and read through it before they buy it. B) Beginner box is deliberately unsupported after level 5 (see the CEO's comments floating around Paizo somewhere as to why; her reasoning is sound and good); players are intended to go straight from the box to full...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Well yes, if I stab you with two hands wielding a giant spear, it is probably a wider arc / bigger swing than if I jab at you with a single handed lance while quickly moving by. The latter is far more about finesse than the former...

Would Paizo Make a Better Steward for Our Hobby?

YMMV then. At our local LGS, while PF definitely grabs the eyes, I've seen kids pick the book up, set it down, start trying to read it, go completely cross-eyed, and then put the book back. In fact, I've never seen anyone under the age 14 not do that. IIRC, the words used in the PFRPG books...

Pathfinder 1E What happened to "Basic Pathfinder"?

I believe 5E will satisfy your needs in that respect.

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

I think my suggestion to Mearls and co will be a choice of benefits, with the second being the "default" and the first being the optional one a) damage on a miss b) nonstackable -1 or -2 penalty to AC for a miss (till EONT). Narratively speaking, dodging a weapon that big...

Would Paizo Make a Better Steward for Our Hobby?

Oy, I regret buying the few PF minis I did - I almost bought a whole case of the Rise of the Runelords miniatures (as I was running a group through it) - glad I did not. I want WotC to be the stewards because we're not screwed if they mess it up. They have the resources to try again. Paizo...

D&D 5E (2014) Evil characters material not going to be in the PHB

Regarding evil: Maybe a line or two, but no need to dwell on it in the PHB. Outside of 1E, it historically has gotten pretty much little to no mention in the PHB. Keeping the PHB small: I think part of our problem (as veteran gamers) is that we have no idea how ridiculous it is for someone who...

Dragon 427 posted and Upcoming Hiatus

Other reason is that way the tools team can start working on the 5E version of Character Builder / Compendium / Monster Builder / etc. They can keep the tools running, but removing the "new content to update every month" part will save them time.

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

Alpha / Friends 'n' Family qualify as "internal" in this case. Just a nitpick.

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

I know I'm just a random dude on the internet - but I've heard that directly from people at Wizards themselves (one who happens to be the poor bastard who has to deal with Hasbro on behalf of D&D, though poor is not a true statement, he has a nice house in Seattle); due to where I live and my...

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

I'm not sure it will be GenCon -- there will be something big I assume at GenCon, maybe a Red Box or something. One of the cool things about NEXT is that the way it is being funded (independently of Hasbro, purely by MtG money), is that the designers have much more leeway in getting it "right"...

    Are we fair to WotC?

The problem is, the creator of the OGL was never in the best position to profit from the OGL; the best licensee was. Of course Paizo has made a ton of money on the OGL...Wizards subsidized their game development and design costs by 95%. The OGL was built for an era where WotC could never...

    Are we fair to WotC?

I hate to be the deflater of cheerleaders, but the OGL as written requires Paizo to make the PRD free and accessible. They are not doing that because they want to. They are doing that because they have to. That said, I do think Paizo's business model of selling maps / accessories is...

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

I'd put the number of closed playtesters closer to 10000, not 1000. :D For a GenCon release, I think they will need to send to printers by April -- at least if they are using the same printers they have been recently. Honestly, the lack of bonuses will also hopefully reduce the room for...

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

Actually, Grapple is the one that comes to mind; as well as Gunslinger & Magus. Oy. Gunslinger makes me think someone did not pay attention to how ACs work at high level.

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

True - but when you factor in that PF has the benefit of using a system that's been errata'd on a system level scale twice already (3.5 / PF original release), I don't really consider PF as any worse errata wise as 4E. (I say this as someone who played both 4E and PF since release). That said...

Pathfinder 1E WotC's playtest and Paizo's playtest -- how do they compare?

The PF playtest was a "here are the rules, have at it" test, which makes sense seeing as it's not a new system, but a modified version of a free set of rules they've changed. It makes much more sense to give a full mechanics playtest for a game that, by definition, is required by law to have...

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

    A) As someone who is more..privy to how the internal testing is going -- it's well over 1000 people currently testing the game at its' latest packet. Most employees are being given carte blanche to invite their friends, friends friends, friends friends friends, etc, as well as many RPG...

D&D 5E (2014) 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

I noticed the light domain only gets medium armor, while the other two get heavy. You may get your wish. Also, thievery rogues get 2 turns per round at level 16. Holy moly.

Legends and Lore: Uber Feats eat Prestige classes and Paragon Paths or give +1 to ability

Feats are wholesale class abilities currently. Like, want to be able to detect traps similarly (But not as amazingly) as rogues? A feat. Want to be able to cast minor healing spells? A feat. Want to freaking RAISE PEOPLE FROM THE DEAD (admittedly 1 minute after battle limit)? Take the...
