    Disney Sniffing Around Hasbro?

More interesting note: what happens to the OGL? Depending on how it was written / implemented, would a takeover of WotC by another company allow the OGL to be removed? Would depend on how strongly written the copyleft was?

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing after 29 Oct playtest

I would surmise that the reason they went towards a modular game was to attempt to make as diverse of a system as possible. Being able to please those who are happy with what they have and also being able to come up with new mechanics for those wishing to push the bounds. That said; this is...

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest: Yay or Nay?

It feels too much towards 3.5/4, and even though that's the only editions I've ever played, it feels like the last round of playtest feedback came back with "make it more like 3.5/4E", and they did so. Then again, this might be them sending the 3.5/4ish builds into the packet so that everyone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing after 29 Oct playtest

Why do you think D&D Next is about modularity? :) If the EN World boards are representative, I do not think it is possible to accomplish what you are advocating, though. Even on these boards, it is nigh impossible to get people to back down from their "stance". Heaven help the Paizo / WotC...

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing after 29 Oct playtest

The entire edition wars thing is more about people wanting to validate themselves by showing that the other person is completely wrong moreso than anything else. It's more about badwrongfun, and proving that the other person is bad & wrong. Problem is, there are a lot of those jerks, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing after 29 Oct playtest

I've talked to folks who've seen the detailed playtest feedback, and they are coming quickly to the conclusion that people are as pissed about options being IN the system as they are about options not being in the system. The amount of times they have received "well, the option I want is in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing after 29 Oct playtest

IIRC, in every edition of the game it has been flat out stated that HP are an abstraction, including the boxed set. Part of it is that we've kind of grown up, and things we were fine not thinking about now we do think about, and is gnawing at us.

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing after 29 Oct playtest

Because many people see this as validation of their own belief about how the game is supposed to be, rather than as a game and giving people options.

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing after 29 Oct playtest

No offense, if you played 3rd edition past...oh, 5th level, and your party wasn't healing to full, they a) didn't have a cleric and b) didn't have enough money to buy a wand of cure light wounds. Cuz, frankly, there's a spell in 3rd edition called "Heal", and it's "You are at full HP". Done...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends and Lore October 22nd

One of the key questions I had at PAX was about the balance issue, and his response was along the lines of "Wizards would be doing the work of balancing, not the GM." The options would all be balanced within each other, and then have guidelines as to what this does for the overall balance of...

D&D 5E (2014) How it plays vs How it feels and looks

Based on hearsay, I would state that each weapon having a special intrinsic ability to those classes who are trained in using weapons is something that is under work. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Of Fighters and Sammiches

I'm going to wonder if a lot of it isn't nostalgia colored glasses on the old sandwich as well, at this point.

Pathfinder 1E What is Paizo going to do when 5E comes out?

A lot of it depends. I think part of the reason 4E did not transition over as well as previous editions was because people were not ready for move on from 3.5, and PF offered a slightly new take on a familiar system. That said; it's now been 4 more years since then, and Paizo has the...

    Playtest Update

I think rather than worrying about which audiences to capture, and who will be put off by what, that they try to make a great game using what they feel are the best parts of each edition, create it in such a way that allows gaming groups to choose from relatively iconic mechanics for a given...

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

Based on everything I've heard and seen about fighters, it's going to be QFQW, probably. Also, they've explicitly talked about negating or reducing the ability of wizards to stack spells on top of each other to shut down bad guys easily. Expect a sustain mechanic for stinking cloud, evard's...

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

The "One True Way" is going to be the biggest hurdle for 5E, IMO. So many RPG players not only want their "way" supported, but also don't want "any other way" supported, either. Based on what I've heard and seen, it seems they want a very basic archetype, and then multiple ways to branch off...

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

I think one of the things that I took away from the multiple PAX panels was that the optionality / modularity is inside of everything, but I don't think that has been really communicated in examples to most folks yet. I think the hardest sell might be for people to understand the paradigm...
