D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

The most powerful red dragon in the MM would require an 11 for a 17th level fighter to hit. (Assuming 20 STR). :-p

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

I think Polymorph was intended to be both the CR is equal or less to that of the spell level (so a caster using an 8th level spell slot for Polymorph would be able to do something CR8 or under). In unsurprising news, CR messes everything up again. :-p

D&D 5E (2014) Amulet of Health, Another Strong Item

I think the kicker here is the "three" attunement slots. If these items require attunement, it is very very hard to give up one of three magic items you can have to randomly increase a stat you maybe only sort of use.

    D&D 5E (2014) Contagion and Boss Fights

It feels like to me that it should be one of those spells that requires a successful attack and a failed save in order to hit; I think I will go with that for the time being.

That, or Lesser Restoration is going to be a must have on my BBEGs. (Or they are going to be undead / other immune to natural disease monsters). I thought they were going to make this so you had to fail at least one save before the disease kicked in. >_<

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Note that the spells used were not from the Feb playtest packet; but a later & separate update. The spells in the Feb playtest packet were tagged as "Not complete / in Draft". That said, I'll use the PHB versions moving forward through this post. We weren't using a MM or an equivalent, we...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

I will second this; they could have severely powered up the warlord-esque build and been fine. Mind you, in a larger group 6+, they are gorram terrifying. I really liked the fighter expertise dice concept from earlier in the playtest; where all fighters got them.

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

They alas changed Way of Shadow somewhat; but should that fight occur during nightfall, it might quickly end poorly. Several of the fights took place in cavern systems & buildings, so they were able to teleport around until they could get in, or merely pop out of Line of Sight and wait it out...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Alas the indomitable nerf makes me a sad panda, so fighters generally have a rough time versus wizards post PHB. Monks and Barbarians tend to turn wizards into piles of goo, though. Shadow Step + proficiency in all saves = dead wizard, or taking 1/2 damage from everything and/or winning...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Actually, a monk will destroy a caster, wall of force be damned. Unless the caster doesn't have a shadow. The issue isn't that concentration breaks. (there are higher level monsters that will make concentration rough, but different story for a different time) The issue is the limit of...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Oo, convince me with more sarcasm, I'm all eyes. :-p Short version 1st 5th 9th 14th levels 5 players, FFA, went for 3 hours real-time, most kills win. Average HP, normal stat array, feats were OKd, no multiclassing. Usually took place on a random pathfinder map, either forest w/ clearings...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

Casters are terrifying in theory, far less in practice. As for play experience...I'm approaching close to 600 hours testing (a three hour game a week for the last 1.5 years and an eight hour game a week for about 9 months, so 3 * 75 (225) + 36 * 8 (288) + 7 single shot PvP tests for 6 hours...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

FWIW, all of the PvP tests I have ran have had martial characters destroy spellcasters (highest test I ran was 16th level); assuming that when a character dies, the character respawns next round with full everything. The non-scaling of spells by character level is BRUTAL, and at higher levels...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Note that a lot of the spells referenced (Speak With Dead, Shatter, etc), are all far far weaker in 5E than they were in earlier editions; please make sure you are using the right version of the spell. Also, most of the spells referenced can only be used one at a time, and heaven help you if...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

Question for those playing higher levels; what monsters were you using? The higher level monsters that existed in the open playtests were always pretty weak compared to what we were dealing with at higher levels in the closed playtest. They had some nasty, nasty anti-caster powers. EDIT...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

    1) True; but I do think a reasonably balanced game through L17 shouldn't be completely disregarded because of a spell level that most people won't get. Also, I think the MM will allay some fears in this regard; last I saw, it seems that higher level monsters are better designed to deal with...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

For Utility purposes, white rooms tend to favor casters heavily. Because the list of things they could do is much higher in a vacuum, while in an in-game scenario, the confines of the specific scenario generally will limit how much of that utility is actually useful or usable. Utility is far...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Capricia Two comments 1) I'm not sure going till 9th level spells is necessarily the best assumption. There has been a lot of work done about how long games go, and I think they said something like less than 1% of games even get to level 16. So I'd personally cap the levels at 16, as I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bracers of Defense

Would like to point out a fighter who takes defensive style as one of his two styles would get a +1 AC on top of Plate, so they could be wielding a 2H weapon and rocking 19 AC. Shield would give them 21. The idea is that a maxed out w/ Bracers Barbarian / Monk is sitting at 23 AC (20 Dex + 20...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Help Me Break the Game!

Grumpy and Omni are both right. The only thing that dwarves get is they negate the speed penalty for wearing heavy armor. I think intended use is that for heavy armor they are proficient in; not all heavy armor, but it says heavy armor, period. The STR requirement for armor is so that one...
