D&D 5E (2014) Things 5E has taught you about your playstyle.

Fighters have always been awesome in the same way every class has always been awesome, but I think I understand where IchneumonWasp is coming from. I really love what they've done with Fighter Subclasses, especially the Battlemaster and Eldritch Knight. No matter how you slice it (get it...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

It sounds pretty complicated, and nearly a revamp of the whole system. Also, I think a lot of 5E combats can be over in as little as 2-3 rounds, so a system that tweaks a class based on the amount of rounds in a combat seems very difficult to balance properly. I feel this is the main issue...

    D&D 5E (2014) Point buy or Dice?

I'm not entirely sure what a clothes horse is, and I'm almost afraid to ask, haha :)

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

That's a good point, but at level 7 they would still be somewhat limited based on spell points. By 12th+, that's when they'd have so many spell points they could cast 4th to 5th level spells with abandon. (And damn, Teleport is really turning out to be my mental nemesis).

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Ah, forgot that Teleport was 6th level. I guess it comes down to, how powerful is it to be able to cast nothing but 4th and 5th level spells, vs. having to cast lower level spells once your higher level slots are expended? I think Concentration is something that can't be underestimated. It...

D&D 5E (2014) Things 5E has taught you about your playstyle.

So far, from both playing and DMing 5E, I've learned that I much prefer the Advantage/Disadvantage system to stacking bonuses of previous editions. Back in the day, I used to enjoy the theorycrafting of building up a character who had "combos" of different spells, abilities, and features to let...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Well, my campaign will be staring at 10th level, and I plan to have them reach the higher levels. Hopefully I should be able to gather some good stories on how it turns out. At least one player will be making a Bard, and I think another is making a Transmuter.

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Good points. Maybe that's traditionally what's wrong with spell point systems. The amount of points given should plateau and then increase very little. So you trade out the amount of spells that a spell slot system gives in exchange for greater flexibility in what spells you actually cast. No...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Thanks for sharing this. This is the kind of story I was hoping to read. Now, in your opinion, with Concentration spells, and with most spells allowing a saving throw each round to end, do you foresee this problem being as severe in 5E? I mean, that does nothing for balancing more uses of pure...

    D&D 5E (2014) AC....5th level

Uh...are those stats typo's, or are you seriously suggesting a 28 Int and 26 Wis?

Thanks for catching that. Interesting tidbits on your Necromancer. How does he like spell points so far? Has he enjoyed the flexibility (perceived or actual) when it comes to knowing what he can cast each day?

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

There are definitely some levels where spell points are a huge bonus, such as 7th. In a normal game you would have a single 4th level slot, but with spell points you have 38 points, and 4th level spells cost 5 points. So you could end up with 6 more castings of a 4th level spell per day than...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

When figuring raw damage, I was sort of using the DMG's idea that most AoE's spells factor about two targets are hit by them per use. Theoretically, fireball can hit a lot more targets than burning hands, but it also comes with the added downside of potential friendly fire (unless you're an...

D&D 5E (2014) Here's something that (to my knowledge) hasn't been brought up. About homebrew and classes.

I'll admit that being restricted to subclasses can in fact make it difficult to port in classes from older editions and make them feel exactly like they used to. I guess I prefer the simplicity of a set class list with varying subclasses over a potentially large list of classes that basically...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Well, let's plug some numbers in and see how it holds up. A level 5 Wizard has the slots you list, 4 1st, 3 2nd, 2 3rd. With spell points, a 5th level Wizard has 27 spell points. A 1st level spell costs 2 points, a 2nd level spell costs 3 points, and a 3rd level spell costs 5 points. This...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Good point. Some of the better spells in the game are Concentration, which inherently limits you from nova-ing. That, coupled with only a single slot of 6th through 9th will probably end up making the spell point experience in 5E D&D play significantly different than it has in previous editions...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Point Variant in Play

Generally when someone references the 5 minute work day, it's assuming that the caster who exhausts all their resources early on is able to convince the rest of the party that they need to rest so he can recover. There's been a lot of arguments over the 5MWD in the past, some sides saying you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lurking players

The level of communication and story sharing we have nowadays would have been inconceivable to groups twenty years ago. By reading forums like this one as a player in any kind of RPG, you basically get to learn from other online people's experiences, not just people you meet in person. That...

    D&D 5E (2014) Common rules mistakes

Oh hey! Good call! So there is a version of pin in 5E. Basically you just need to grapple a target, then on your next turn use the shove action to knock them prone. On their turn they can't stand from prone as they have 0 speed from the grapple, and if they attack you they have Disadvantage. As...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Concentration Bugging You?

This just reminds me how often rare it is for adventures to feature spellcasting foes. Has anyone else noticed this? Even in the monster manual, quite the majority of monsters have no spellcasting, and some, like dragons, have it as optional.
