    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Monk

    1. My experience suggests that moving away from an enemy is frequently useful. 2. Mobile costs 1 attack(kindof, you still actually get the attack, it just might not be on your optimal target) to move away from one enemy. Disengage costs 2 attacks(you can't flurry) to move away from any amount...

D&D 5E (2014) What actions by a PC Don't need to be stated?

Yeah, that type of game isn't inherently bad or anything(some people clearly really enjoy it), it's just not the type of game I want to play in. I've done it(even semi-successfully), it's just not my kind of fun. And it sounds like the player in question has a similar distaste for it.

    Okay, sorry, I guess?

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Monk

Dude, I'm not trying to sound smart at your expense. Just because I correct you on something, doesn't mean I think I'm smarter than you or that you should feel dumb for misunderstanding. D&D is a complicated game. All I'm saying is that you are incorrect about Dual Wield combining with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Monk

Disengage makes it so your movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks for the rest of the round, at the cost of your bonus action. Mobile makes it so you don't provoke opportunity attacks from enemies you attack for the rest of the round, with no action cost. They are fulfilling the same...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Monk

Defensive duelist is a pretty solid monk feat. I'd pick it up later than level 1 though. Two weapon fighting requires a bonus action to get a second attack. Martial arts also requires a bonus action to get a second attack. You only get one bonus action. Two weapon fighting thus has no use...

D&D 5E (2014) What actions by a PC Don't need to be stated?

I could do that, as well. I could spend 5 minutes per search describing in explicit detail how I'm searching for each physical object for traps. I could probably take up a whole session searching a single room that way, if you really wanted me to. It doesn't make for fun gaming for anybody...

D&D 5E (2014) What actions by a PC Don't need to be stated?

Exactly. I am fully capable of succesffully playing in a "DM assumes you did the wrong thing unless you explicitly said you're doing the right thing" game. I just find the playstyle to be EXTREMELY tedious.

D&D 5E (2014) What actions by a PC Don't need to be stated?

When I was doing that, I -already- didn't like the way my DM was handling traps, so it's all good. :)

D&D 5E (2014) What actions by a PC Don't need to be stated?

On a more relevant note, I would consider 1 to be a fair ruling, and 2 to be borderline fair/unfair. 1 is simply the player making a poor decision and trying to talk his way out of it. 2 is okay in a vacuum, but if the DM frequently gotchas me on things that seem like reasonable common sense...

D&D 5E (2014) What actions by a PC Don't need to be stated?

The thing that made me develop this technique was when I succeeded on my find traps roll on a door, then sprung a trap when I went to pick it. "You didn't say you searched the lock". After about an hour of bogging the game down by searching literally everything the DM mentioned for traps, I...

D&D 5E (2014) What actions by a PC Don't need to be stated?

The last couple of editions have been better about this(passive perception yay!), but the big one for me is: "I search this specific thing for traps". Back in the day, DMs would try to gotcha me with "Well, you didn't say you searched X for traps". I developed a routine to fight it. The...

D&D 5E (2014) What does balance mean to you?

Most characters of other races will have one attribute one point higher than a Variant Human. That's not a significant difference in skill usage. The biggest disadvantage to Variant Human is probably actually the lack of Darkvision. That can be a problem for stealthers. Other than that, the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Monk

Resilient is quite good, yes. It gets rendered useless eventually though(though not totally if you build for an odd con). Mobile starts quite good, and ends good. Mobile basically allows you, whenever you were going to use your bonus action to disengage, to instead do a Flurry of Blows and...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

Would Monk be more fun if it had more Ki at low levels? Absolutely. Is Ki out of balance with the resource mechanics of the other classes? Nope. Every class has too few resources at low level in 5e. It's one of the "features" of the system across the board. Tbh, I'd consider Ki to be the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Monk

The debate on Mobile for monk is an interesting one. One side says "It overlaps with things you already have. Useless." The other says "It improves your ki/action economy. Awesome." Both sides are actually correct in their fact gathering, but come to completely different conclusions. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Monk

Haste isn't part of the class, so it's not a great idea to consider it in monk balance discussions. Patient defense is actually pretty awesome. But it requires your bonus action. Which is true of most of the monk abilities. The strength of Mobile is that you don't have to use your bonus...

D&D 5E (2014) What does balance mean to you?

Not familiar enough with 5e to answer this question(and your feat question) perfectly. My theorycrafting suggests Variant Human is probably the overall best race, and Great Weapon Master is probably the best feat. Neither of these appear to cause mechanical issues(and wouldn't cause most...

D&D 5E (2014) What does balance mean to you?

In a game with multiple options(class/race/feats/whatever), one of the options will always be the best option. I consider a game balanced as long as the best option doesn't break the game(ie. it causes the mechanics to function in very unintended ways, or causes the mechanics to operate in a...

D&D 5E (2014) Need advice on how to reward 1 character but not whole party.

I do agree. To keep the campaign running smoothly, I think it would be VERY important to move the character from "willing participant in demonic plot" to "actively rebelling against demonic master". The character should probably be forced to confront the reality of what he did. As an example...
