My problem with SR -while it is good for a dark campaign- is that in my opinion the creation of NPCs takes a bit slower than the d20 system. And the various rolls (attack, defense, skills) require a higher number of rolls than d20. And you could add sanity, cyberware (let us hope that D20...

Well. As any setting based on the past of real - life you'd have to be really *in* it. So you must know the key political figures, the world and even the slang of the era to create good adventures for your players.
