D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

Not reliably by WotC, which was my point. With very few exceptions the adventures published by WotC for 3.x and 4.x were, to say it mildly, poor. Dungeon Magazine during the period you mention did have quite a bit of good adventures and the magazine was being handled by Paizo, not WotC. Paizo...

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder w/o Cleric?

All of those system issues were a direct result of how many people were already playing the game in previous editions. The system simply "codified" the most common house rules, and made them part of the default system. However, the system assumes those resources are there, and "balanced"...

    Falling damage question

    That is correct. 0-9 - No damage 10-19 - 1d10 damage 20-29 - 2d10 damage Etc.

D&D 5E (2014) So what's the problem with restrictions, especially when it comes to the Paladin?

Actually no, if a grown man is acting like a 2 year old I don't try to "correct" their behavior with gaming. I don't entertain that type of behavior at my games. I don't play with asshats, and have no desire to coddle those that act that way.

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

I don't understand what you're getting at or what it accomplishes, but it seems a lot like baiting. So I'll just step out. Good luck.

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

This is perfectly acceptable and it's no surprise that many campaigns have certain restrictions on what races, classes, feats, spells, etc., are available. I've run games with no druids, monks, halflings or gnomes. I've played in games with no elves, and with restrictions on equipment (armor &...

    Castle Defense

We just completed playing through my 4e conversion of A1-A4. When the players got to the stockade they made the mistake of alerting the guards. Every resource was brought to bear, and it was highly painful.

D&D 5E (2014) So what's the problem with restrictions, especially when it comes to the Paladin?

This is so true. You hardly ever get what you want, you do however get what you most expect. If you treat your players like spoiled 2 year olds they start behaving like spoiled 2 year olds.

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

Sideways of the entire discussion I've used a skill challenge structure to run an assassination style scenario. So using 4e does not necessarily require too many work-arounds to pull off. The thief/assassin would have an advantage in that structure, and everyone else would just be adequate...

    What if races leveled up?

First of all dnoonan, welcome "back". It has been a while since I saw comments from you on game design, and I must say that I missed them. I always thought your work on both 3e and 4e was great. I hope to see more comments from you. I think that some, if not most of the problem is trying to...

Pathfinder 1E Your experiences with broken Pathfinder characters? (edit: more accurately, w/1 avg PF character when the rest of the party is meh)

I'm sorry but, WHAT? If the game system at 7th level already allows for a variance of defensive capacity of at least 17 points (AC 29 vs. AC 12)in the same group, it's not a DM challenging problem but a system need serious rework problem. I DM to enjoy myself, not to spend inordinate amounts...

    D&D 4E 4E Compatible Mass Combat Rules

When the swarm gets to "bloodied" you can have rules to attempt to route it. Successful intimidate check vs. Will causes a route. If there is a "leader" within X squares of the swarm use the higher of the swarm or leader defense. As an alternate an intimidate check that is higher than the...

    Critical Hit Podcast

Thanks for this link. I had not seen this before. It took me a while to locate all the episodes but now they're downloaded and being listened to. I like how they've incorporated "rules" talk with their game without being disruptive. Quite nice.

    D&D 5E (2014) New D&D Next Packet Is Available

This is a relevant observation and it would be good for WotC to label the rules based on where they see them in the basic, standard, advanced, extreme, epic continuum. This way play testers would understand where in the complexity hierarchy the rules they are seeing are sitting. This might...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

I find that as a DM I do both. I don't think that scene framing is completely prep-less it's just a different type of prep. If my players are going with a lot of preparations on their side to get into a particular environment/combat, I want to reward that, not stifle it. So their preparations...
