If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

Yeah that's way better than what I did. And it's not at all what I described myself doing in the post you quoted. I mean, I did what I said: described a narrow ledge, and asked for a skill check. Do you realize what you've described is a good example of what the "other side" is talking about...

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

Quoting Myself For Great Justice! I meant to also say that I started DMing so much better when I adopted what I think of as the AD&D mindset. I didn't change the rules of 3e, I just started asking the players "whaddya do?" instead of n telling them whatta do. And then 5e came along doing the...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Ranged Weapons and Magic Ammunition

Right, but let's say I hit 7 times out of 10. The simple part is figuring out I recovered 5 pieces of ammo, aye. It's also easy to see that only 3 pieces of ammo are still magical. The question I was trying to ask is, how do we determine how many of those 3 still-magical shots do I actually...

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

It's not that using skills to overcome an obstacle is boring. What's boring is the DM laying out the obstacle and asking for the skill check to overcome it, with the players major involvement in the scene being to roll some dice. *Sigh* I've done that before:"As you head along the cliff, you...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Ranged Weapons and Magic Ammunition

And just to clear up this last question: In the PH equipment section, when it defines ammunition it says that the character can recover half his used ammo (hit or missed) after a fight by spending one minute gathering it up. How you integrate that with the DMG's description of +x ammunition...

D&D 5E (2014) Changing Expertise, Adding Double Proficiency

I don't actually want to derail you're thread so I'm gonna keep this short and ask that nobody bother debating this. It really is just my preference, and I should have put this post in your poll thread, not this one. But onward . . . . . . Apart from Expertise and in-game rewards or boons that...

D&D 5E (2014) Changing Expertise, Adding Double Proficiency

It gets crazier when you consider the Diviner using his Portents on skill checks. Every time he gets a 20, someone in the party is gonna do something craaaaazy! And the odds of that are what, once every ten days or so?

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

And if you look closely, you can see the strawman is holding a sign saying "trap here."

How often does your party use a potion of healing

I think my 7th level character has drank one potion of healing, maybe 2, over the course of his career.

Show me that boy, and I'll show you a Millennial.

If I had my way, the Proficiency bonus would be an unchanging +2.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Ranged Weapons and Magic Ammunition

The is the easiest way to answer the question for a given campaign, certainly. It's certainly better than the moment of idiocy I had when I introduced magic magazines for my campaign's guns. So now I gotta be real careful that some gunslinger doesn't wind up with a +3 rifle loaded with a +3...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Ranged Weapons and Magic Ammunition

Yeah, my DMG says "once it hits a target the ammunition is no longer magical."

    Large size characters

This is a good point. There seems little need for the Strength and Constitution prereqs because the character the feat works best for is gonna pump up this ability scores anyway. The prereqs, then, are just a barrier to players who are interested in the feat for other reasons. It could be a...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Ranged Weapons and Magic Ammunition

The weapon +x entry says nothing about whether it's a melee or ranged, so yeah, a longbow +1 applies to attack and damage. And the ammunition +x entry specifically says it applies to attack and damage. I don't know about stacking those, but I would rule against it.

What does it mean to "Challenge the Character"?

Do you know why it failed? Do you wanna know why it failed? Well I'll tell you why it failed. First let's show that attempt at humor: Slapping a big fat smug smile emoticon at the end of a joking comment might work, it might get us to laugh at ourselves. Placing that joking comment...

Unsatisfied with the D&D 5e skill system

Aye. And even at my table, ultimately there's still the opportunity to veto the decision. I find that letting the decision be theirs - but one that I can veto - means when the grey areas pop up, the decision is far more likely to lean toward the player's perspective than if I'm actively...

Unsatisfied with the D&D 5e skill system

Nice! (I didn't read the article.) I do prefer that the player doesn't bother asking if he can use animal handing, but rather state that he is doing so. Like: Player: I do my best Crocodile Dundee impersonation on that skag, so it doesn't alert the rest of the pack. DM: okay, give me a...
