Unsatisfied with the D&D 5e skill system

I figure that part of that comes from the player wanting to make sure that he gets to use the skill that he intends. I know I get a little irritated when I describe an action that I figure it's animal handing, but results in my DM choosing a different skill. ( The easy solution to that is for...

Help Balance Features for Alternate Dragonborn, Please

I remember someone going through the monster manual (probably with the help of D&DBeyond) analyzing the usefulness of the different damage types. If In remember right, bludgeoning, slashing and piercing were all near the top of the scale, although from top to bottom everything was roughly equal...

What does it mean to "Challenge the Character"?

Remember how last month a couple people were asking that we include an edition tag to our new threads? When I saw that, I wondered "why the heck would we bother doing that when this is the 5e forum?" . . . and that's when I noticed this is now the D&D forum.

I have an issue with swarms

There's nothing stopping you from making the swarm bigger. But I'd think it's easier to just use multiple Medium swarms. Think of it as a tool for building whatever size you want - and as multiple Medium swarms, SkidAce's suggestion is effectively implemented. Look at it as a tool not the...

I have an issue with swarms

Splitting the attack in 2 is cool - it lets you have the swarm sweep through the party attacking a couple PCs as it moves. That's a nice touch. I'd skip the advantage, though. I just don't like making it an always on thing. Pack tactics can be mitigated by the players if they want to bother...

    That sounds right.

I have an issue with swarms

That rule does account for source. In 4e, the forced movement from melee and ranged attacks are weapon attacks. Thunderwave is an area effect.

A GMing telling the players about the gameworld is not like real life

Woot! I'm a winner! . . . at least until the Internet Olympic Committee rules that I have to take humour suppression drugs to level the playing field. Ain't no way I'm doing that, so I'll have to forfeit.

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

Are you implying that Tony is one of the Four Horsemen? Because if you are I'm gonna have to do my own implying, something about those pestilent do-gooders. Also, I'm hungry.

Want to shake things up: Doorways, Scouting, Caution

In designing my megadungeon, I've been using "an area" (instead of "room") as the basic unit of dungeon layout. At its most basic, an area is a small cluster of rooms with one "encounter" spread throughout. When the encounter involves monsters, for example, the monsters are unlikely to be just...

    D&D General Kara-Tur vs Rokugan

I would've voted for Rokugan over Kara-Tur, because I've actually played in it back in 3e, but ever since then I've been enamored of the Ravenloft islands, and they've popped up in my current campaign notes a couple times now.

What does it mean to "Challenge the Character"?

:hmm: Well, the latter wouldn't be on the cusp of violence if the former didn't instigate them by building forts. :heh:

What does it mean to "Challenge the Character"?

So. I had started out with the intention of the tentacles being a part of the orc, but instead the idea, uh, morphed into an alien (of the Far Realm kind): Aberrant Orcs These are just like regular orcs, but there's a Tentacle Mass living inside them. When the orc becomes bloodied, there is a...

What does it mean to "Challenge the Character"?

Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! I just gotta figure out if those tentacles belong to the orc, or a creature bursting out of the orc's chest. *Yoink*
