Then they might feel compelled to breed the bloodhound to get Thurston Howl Jr and then try for Thurston Howl III.

D&D 5E (2014) To boxed text or not to boxed text

This is pretty much my experience, too. I find boxed text too often assumes too much, which leaves me having to edit it on the fly, having to figure out what to cut and what needs to be reworded. Even in what is pretty decent boxed text, like @Immortal Sun posted earlier: Like, if it's not...

Mrs Howell! (After making sure Mr Howell meets an unfortunately comical death by coconut)

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

I dig through my Socratic Philosophy textbook in search of the answers to these weighty questions . . .*Rolls his lucky d20*. . . 7! What ability modifier do I use? And can I add my proficiency bonus to the roll to because of my philosophy degree? . . . Er, who's the DM of this thread anyway?

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

I roll an insight check to see if Dave's telling the truth . . . 13! Does that beat the DC?

D&D 5E (2014) To boxed text or not to boxed text

It assumes so many other things, too. For example: That the players didn't have an unseen servant opening the door for them, and aren't even near enough to see into the room. That they don't teleport into the room. That they haven't already talked to whatever's in the room.

What's your opinion on "Save or Die" effects?

Yeah, this. If the DM isn't committed to PCs dying, then save-or-dies should be of the table. But even then . . . in my megadungeon campaign* where I am totally committed to PCs dying, I still tend to avoid save-or-dies. The latest trap I wrote up involves a collapsing ceiling, which I think...

That would have to be somone not looking to make an Ender's Game reference. Or at least someone willing to make more than the minimum effort to make such a reference.

Have you looked at Dungeon of the Mad Mage? It doesn't use boxed text.

D&D 5E (2014) To boxed text or not to boxed text

I like the idea of boxed bullet points. The stuff that almost certainly should be told to the players. And then unboxed bullet points for the DM's discretion based on the circumstances.

D&D 5E (2014) Matt Mercer Just Changed My Mind About Multiclassing

The internet has taught me not to give a flying fig about metagaming. (It probably originally taught me that metagaming is cheating, though, so it's kind of a wash.)

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

It is essentially that simple, yes. I don't know how simple it will actually prove to be in play, because my players often unexpectedly complicate things by thinking it can't be as simple as it looks*. To answer the question you put in parentheses: I don't intend to tell the players that the...

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

My megadungeon has numerous paths to most areas, and so there'd generally be another way around the trapped door. And there's also goblins that go around resetting their traps or laying new ones. But yeah, if the area beyond the trapped door wasn't accessible, then it would be silly of me to...

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

Well my intention in giving you that heads up was to be helpful. I thought that you'd like to edit your less than perfect wording into something that wasn't the opposite of what you meant to say. Or, if you didn't want to do that, I thought that my pointing it out first might make it less...
