D&D 5E (2014) What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?

I want more linear dungeons. So tired of the poor quality sandbox modules such as Princes of the Apocalypse. Even Ravenloft was much longer than it needed to be and was bogged down by many meaningless encounters. Stop trying to stretch out modules into super modules just to gouge people for...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

No. The monk has more than enough ki points, especially if you are gauging spells for the elemental monk. Spells are supposed to be long rest mechanics but monks get ki on short rest. Now take the sorcerer. That class really needs more spell points or the monk's short rest mechanic.

D&D 5E (2014) Should Warlock Patrons be able to revoke a Warlock's powers if the Patron is displeased?

There is no such thing as a free lunch. I think any patron with the possible exception of The Old Ones would outright take away power from a warlock for what it deemed as misbehavior. Demons & Devils are under no game obligation to play fair with a PC at all and even fey as written in most old...

Fantasy Author & Game Designer Joe Dever Passes Away

I still remember the first Lone Wolf book I read. It was called Shadow on the Sand. It was the 5th book in the series but I picked it up due to the great cover art and especially the beautiful illustrations by Gary Chalk. (His illustration of the broadsword was awe inspiring) Joe Dever did so...

Pathfinder 1E D & D and/or Pathfinder, the effects of selective spell exclusions

I never really saw an issue with teleport. Its a plot device to help the players move through large areas without resorting to detail. Most people point to Lord of the Rings as the reason to not include teleport. D&D has many reasons why teleport is a bad idea such as unfamiliarity of terrain...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

Why does there have to be a punishment in order for you to feel a rule is validated? Is it not enough that you ask the arch druid "Why great sir do we not wear metal armor. It offers far better protection and makes practical sense?" The old druid raises a bushy eyebrow and replies, " We just...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

Trying to keep alive some D&D traditions is worth fighting for. I do not want the druid to be a cleric. I want her to be different. If you are complaining about arbitrary restrictions on classes then where is your beef with the rogue? The rogue gets weapon proficiency in longswords which have...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

I don't think that every cleric needs to have a rules lawyer book written for them like a real world religion to be role-played correctly. I would think that if you saw a cleric of the healing goddess spreading disease that 1) you would wonder why said god would be granting that power & 2) why...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

So you liked that these priests & the paladin had defining characteristics that imposed limitations on them but you don't feel the need for druids to have a single limitation? Seems a bit odd to me.

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

No it is not a box of worms. Catholics have unifying principals that bind them as Catholics and you cannot be one if you do not follow the big unifying principal of the trinity. Armor restriction is a BIG principal of druidism as metal is a symbol for death and druids are all about the cycles of...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

No, you want the exception, just so you can min max a character. Paladins have always had alignment restrictions. If 5E took that and disregarded it then its a HUGE failing of 5E. There is NO point in having a paladin class. Just roll the paladin into the cleric and be done with him. I am so...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

I disagree. Adherents of a faith would be the same regardless of where they are located. A Catholic or a Buddhist will still observe tenants of their faith if they are true to them regardless of the location they are at. The neat thing is in D&D unfaithful priests are actually punished because...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

I think that you are misinterpreting what the previous poster meant. Tatyana is the reason for Strahd's fall through no fault of her own. Strahd was a cold brute. Bitter that he wasted his youth doing all the work and had no family to show for it. No succession, no lineage. It would be galling...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

What is it about paladins & rangers from 1rst edition that you miss? What is it about 2nd edition clerics that subsequent editions of the cleric not capture as well as 2nd edition did?

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

I disagree. It should be standardized because the power comes from nature & naturally occurring things. Wearing metal armor is unnatural. I heard from a Jewish friend that their holy books could not be written with a metal pen. A goose quill had to be used since metal signified death & a quill...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

I disagree. Paladins have codes, warlocks have patrons. Clerics have deities. Monks have monastic traditions. If you wish to hand wave these restrictions in your game world, that is YOUR game world but these restrictions exist. I could not imagine if my cleric of Mishakal (Healing domain Dragon...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

That's cool. If that is your game. Play it how you want. I do have an issue with people wanting NO restrictions on their characters. If you want to homebrew that dwarven druids in your game world can wear metal armor then go for it. I do not want to see that become cannon. In my mid being a...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

I disagree with your assessment. By removing restrictions, even if they seem like arbitrary restrictions you remove the need for the class. Why have druids at all if you can just make a nature cleric and keep the armor proficiencies that a cleric gets? Its the argument that broke out in 4rth...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

Why can't people come to grips with the fact that druids just don't like to wear metal armor? That its rule of their faith? Not all religious rules need to make sense or have an in game penalty or restriction for failing to adhere to hem. At worst I would say that it cuts off the druid's...

    Fighter design goals . L&L April 30th

I have a few complaints with Mike Mearl's approach to the fighter and I will list them below. Please let me know what you think in regards to them. 1) The fighter is the "best" at combat. I do not think that is fair to the other fighter "sub-classes" such as paladin, ranger and barbarian...
