D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

My name is Shepherd, and this is my favorite post on the Citadel. I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to the Ranger. Who needs them? In a game designed with niches in mind, they don't fill a particularly useful one. Hardly anyone is playing at Tier 3.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I suppose it's technically true the DM could restrict any class they want. From a practical point of view, how easy would it be for such a DM to find enough players for a campaign? I don't think it's unreasonable for anyone to show up to a D&D campaign with the expectation the base classes in...

Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

Here’s a trick I picked up from a modeler who works on plastic cars when he wants a rusted effect. This is a Fallout miniature, a robot Nuka Cola mascot, I start by giving it a base coat of metal. For the next step, it’s important you give the paint a little time to cure. I waited two hours...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

There are only three classes necessary: The Fighting Man, Magic User, and Cleric. Everything else is superfluous.

How Long Do You Wait Before You Houserule a New TTRPG?

I try to avoid house rules where possible even if I think a rule is silly. For Savage Worlds, I instituted a house rule combining Swimming, Climbing, and Throwing skills into the singular Athletics skill long before it became the official. SW skills are supposed to be very broad, and people...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

For 5th Part Deux: Electric Boogaloo, I use critical rolls as written. If you roll a 20 during a fight you score a critical hit. Roll double your damage dice and let's get on with the show! I natural 20 rolled on a skill check is not an automatic success nor is rolling a 1 a critical...

    Most influential RPG

Did it have a bad reputation? This is a game I remember seeing at the game store but my friends and I never really gave it more than a cursory glance.

D&D General The First Demise of TSR: Gygax's Folly

Wizards of the Coast was a financially successful company flush with cash allowing them to purchase TSR lock, stock, and barrel. TSR is no more. It has ceased to be. It is bereft of life. It rests in peace. It is an ex-company. It's true that D&D the game still exists, but the company Gary...

    WoD renaming, White Wolf returns

White Wolf isn't really back. This is just a rebrand. Nothing to get excited about.

D&D General The First Demise of TSR: Gygax's Folly

Having been defunct since 1997, the business Gary started, TSR, does not exist. TSR was wholly consumed by Wizards of the Coast and only exists as a memory. I know I've been pretty critical of Gary in this thread, but I don't think he was just another guy. I know I couldn't have accomplished...

D&D General The First Demise of TSR: Gygax's Folly

Nobody can take away the role Gygax played in the creation of RPGs as we know it. Although it's ironic Gygax himself was dismissive of the role of others, like Arneson, in the creation of RPGs as we know it. Gygax was and will continue to be an icon of the industry like Ford is to the...

    D&D General Dwarven Vikings

I made my dwarves Bavarians. They mostly lived underground, but some of them lived on the surface because hops and barley aren't going to grow themselves. Most of the dwarves living underground thought the farmers were crazy and didn't understand how they kept themselves from falling into the sky.

D&D General Is it bad to make your version of another player's character? (My mental hangup.)

You all have my permission to use any NPC or PC I've created as inspiration for your own games. It won't bother me in the least.

Rant: The WORST way to encourage people to try other games than D&D

On day one of my job at a hobby shop the manager said to me, “Don’t ever bad mouth anything we’re selling. It’s okay to say it’s not your thing, but don’t tell them it’s bad.” I was a bit turned off by Candela Obscura because I kept hearing the game described as not having all the yucky...

D&D General The First Demise of TSR: Gygax's Folly

Gygax himself credited Williams with righting the ship when he brought her aboard. Williams might not have been a gamer herself, but just working at TSR means she had something to do with the hobby.

D&D General The First Demise of TSR: Gygax's Folly

Of course not, she was a business woman who wanted to save the business she had been tasked with protecting. She didn’t do it out of kindness, she was looking to make money.
