If the player of the dead PC doesn't mind being Reincarnated for the sake of roleplaying, then I think you should go that route.

They could always merge the documents when they need to do the index. Unless of course Word doesn't update the entries when changes are made. Also, it may be that developers marking the entries as they go is distracting (I think I would find it so if I were writing creatively).

I don't see how it could be extremely hard to put in an index. In fact, with some minimal programming you could come up with an auto indexer. I.e. find all occurances of a specific word/term and give the page numbers, do for each word/term you want indexed. Just give the program a list of...

It'd be extremely easy with XML->XSLT. XSLT was made for that kind of transformation. Excel isn't really. Also, XML and XSLT are free. I already have a sheet that does E-Tools XML to ORPG XML. It's quite handy.

The way I do it in my campaign is that the wizards (PC wizards of course) can gain their 2 spells/level from any of the PHB spells, and have to find any others. Makes for some interesting things happening :)
