D&D 5E (2014) So long and thanks for all the fish!

Ya'll should consider being right more often. Nobody CAN argue with me. The internet is so weird. One day aliens will find our remains under the ocean and be like, "Wow. They got so sick of arguing with the same old people that they built a data infrastructure to help them find new people to...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I took that post as "most people misunderstand the 'rule' of rulings not rules"

D&D 5E (2014) +1 sword or Flame Tongue- or both?

+1 flametongue with 3 charges that does +1d6 fire damage for a minute when you spend a charge. You can stack the charges.

Hardcore Basic D&D - Input Needed

I kinda wish they had built 5e around levels 1-10 or so and did a second "Advanced D&D" set for levels 11-20. I'm curious to look this over!

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

A lot of people don't do long rests correctly. According to the PHB - A long rest only restores HALF of your hit dice - You only get 1 every 24 hours I missed that first part until recently myself.

D&D 5E (2014) What sorts of things are you working on? (3PP or personal use homebrew)?

My next campaign is gonna be very GP and XP intensive. Players will be in a Hogwarts style academy for heroes with teachers who award XP for achieving goals. Plus Extra Credit XP for doing more difficult stuff (bring me back a bullywug alive so we can dissect it) and they will have to pay GP to...

The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

Certainly too few rules can lead to confusion... that would fall into Einstein's "not simpler" addendum though.

D&D 5E (2014) 1st-10th Level: How Many Times Does A PC Mage Cast Magic Missile?

In our first 5e campaign I think the wizard cast it maybe 12 times before level 5. In the next campaign they never cast it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Eternal See Invisible

Yeah, usually it's a list with 20 entries and the first 10 are either "nothing happens" or just flavor stuff like spooky sounds or noticing a cryptic/funny message carved on something. The players know they have about a 50/50 chance of raising hell when they cast Knock or take a rest.

D&D 5E (2014) Good disadvantage for missing heart?

I think others nailed it. My instinct was to give them Disadvantage on CHA saves and advantage on INT saves since they are fairly rare, but it was a boring instinct.

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

Passive Perception is a mess. It's always been a mess. I understand how it makes the game make more "sense" but the DM sets the DCs so what is the point from a gameplay perspective? It's just an invisible switch I hit for the players. I just don't see how unlocking boxes text makes the game...

D&D 5E (2014) Expert Weapon Damage (a simple thing, really)

I might be lazy and just add 1d4 to that weapon type. Then maybe at higher levels you could either choose a different weapon to gain 1d4 or upgrade the die value for a weapon you've already specialized in.

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Twitter Poll: "The druid gets one of the following: Spellcasting | Shapeshifting | Animal companions. Choose."

I don't think that's the spirit of the question though right? That's kinda like wishing for more wishes or saying your favorite color is "rainbow" to me. I think if someone says "choose one" and doesn't include an "all of the above" option than we shouldn't assume spellcasting means "all of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Twitter Poll: "The druid gets one of the following: Spellcasting | Shapeshifting | Animal companions. Choose."

In my head, druids and clerics are still both types of "priests" and 5e seems to have taken that space and made them all clerics. I'm fine with all of that. So, to me, a nature cleric (if not a setting specific version of one) works just fine as a non-shifting Druid. See also: spell-less...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Simple Spell-less Ranger Option

Hrm.... I like the saves. Feels like Rangers are "survivors" In this iteration. Personally I don't care about the spallcsting though. I play as a ranger and I just narrate the spells as something other than spells.

    D&D 5E (2014) Eternal See Invisible

In my game breaking down a door, smashing a chest, or taking a rest triggers me rolling on the random encounters table. Long rest means I roll with "advantage" and take the worse encounter. Next campaign I am adding rituals to the list of things that do so.

    D&D 5E (2014) Buffing the Champion Fighter

Stupid question: does the system already have an ability that grants "advantage" when using hit dice?

D&D 5E (2014) Fighting Styles seem to be an afterthought rather than integral..

This is exactly how I feel about all of that.

    D&D 5E (2014) Experiment: DnD 5e meets Dungeonworld

I've done a lot of borrowing from the apocalypse engine, but have erred closer on the other side of it. That system as a lot of practical advice for running a game. Much of it is common sense. All of this is to say, "I approve."

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use all of the P.C. races and classes from the PHB?

My personal philosophy is that the DM not a novelist or a film director. Obviously I should get to have fun and indulge myself, but part of that fun comes from bouncing off of the players. Generally I build a rough sketch of the kind of campaign I wanna run, then I ask the players what kind of...
