D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Yea, I'm much more concerned about if a game "hits its mark" more than "what mark is it trying to hit". I love "Shadow of the Demon Lord/Weird Wizard", as an example, because it's basically D&D but better (IMO, of course). But that isn't because I only love games that try to be like D&D. I...

You can also be sick of D&D being the 800-pound gorilla while simultaneously liking the game. I still play plenty of 5e, despite the fact I would be thrilled to see it commercially capsize.

Depends on the playstyle I'm running. More OSR style: In combat, they wouldn't notice, unless the player makes a specific declaration oriented towards asking about features of the environment that might be advantageous. Then I would narrate them noticing the scroll. More "light-narrativism"...

I think a lot of us take it as a given that if you're playing a different game, then your "primary mode of play" will probably change. But we also generally assume that the point of trying a new game is to have a different experience, not simply find something that's a slightly better fit for...

For situations like that, I used to make the players do a Perception check, or whatever the system equivalent was. (Spot, for example, in 3e). Now if there's a scroll there, I just tell them.

Sure, and I stand by that, as someone who currently runs 5e more than any other system. Perception skills cause issues in play as opposed to simply attempting to be as clear as possible to give the players gameable information. I think those skills continue to exist because of desires for...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

As a vampire, energy draining is also something we do in the shadows. :)

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I like it. It’s like Saga of Pliocene Exile but in the other direction.

Hells to the no. Analysis is interesting and fun.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I haven’t purchased the rules yet, but I’m assuming there’s some version of “Let it ride” so players are only rolling when something is at stake? No bunches of random Perception rolls.

Yea, pretty much every player at my table will advocate against themselves if they feel that’s the proper ruling. Heck, one time a player argued for a ruling that officially killed off his character. It does help that most of my players have taken their turn as GM, so we all think about rules...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Exactly. Other than being 2 chunky dice, they’re actually totally different. 1) Duality dice are the “standard roll”, A/D is a bonus/penalty. 2) Duality dice are summed, A/D is best/worst of the two. 3) The dice order matters in Duality Dice (one is Hope, the other is Fear, the order is...

Daggerheart Releases Two New Classes for Playtest

I think there have been some JRPGs that called the unarmed type “fighter”. Dragon Quest 3?

I would agree. I think narrative games and more old-school are in agreement in being opposed to the power fantasy of modern neotrad. Both types of games are more interested in character failure.

D&D 5E (2014) Wonder why there aren't any Elemental Domains (Earth, Air, Fire, Water)?

"If clerics work like X, then gods must work like Y" is equally plausible with "If gods work like X, then clerics should work like Y." One is just "bottom-up" worldbuilding, and the other is "top-down" worldbuilding.

Wake me up if/when it's actually sapient. Or at least diverse and multicellular (or alien equivalent).

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

This seems like part of the general divide in opinion if classes are more of an occupation or vocation that the character follows through their own volition, or if class is more of a metagame container to hold related character concepts that share a mechanical framework. And this is a divide...
