Making Monsters Without the Monster Builder?

In most cases of this nature (monster building, npc building, encounter budget) most aspects are covered in the chapter entitled "DM Toolbox." Some of the rules are outdated, errataed or obsolete, but that's beside the point.

    Slayer build sillyness

I agree. The PHB Fighter may not be a Striker, nor may it deal the damage of other Defenders, but the class features that are geared towards how it does its job guarantee that when played right, it can be LETHAL LETHAL LETHAL. Through a combination of favorable dice, and absurd accuracy...

    How big are regulation dice?

"Say there... Is that pre-regulation Destroyer-class specially-molded recoil boosted dice you have there?" "Why, yes it is! Ta-ta!"

D&D 4E 4E Tomb of Horrors Retail Edition vs. 4E Tomb of Horrors DM Rewards Edition

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Garden of Graves map from page 15 without any of the numerical notations?

Ashes of Athas, a new shared world Darksun campaign from Wizards

The first thing I thought when I read the thread title was, "Ashes of Athas Sand to sandy We know magic's oh so handy Strung out on an arcane high Hitting an eco low."

D&D 4E 4E Tomb of Horrors Retail Edition vs. 4E Tomb of Horrors DM Rewards Edition

Yeah I've already flipped through the 4E book, but I'm perfectly fine with running the first chapter. I'm more concerned with the salient aspects of design and the differences between how they are written, as I don't really expect to run either in their entirety. Simply just run the thing...

Humor: What happened during the podcast?

In a well lit situation room surrounded by a sea of highly trained intelligence analysts. “You are Mike Mearls?" “Yes.” “Eight counts playing Pathfinder in the office, two counts stealing power cards.” “Yeah, hey look I already made my deal. I file a report against Heinsoo and I walk.”...

D&D 4E 4E Tomb of Horrors Retail Edition vs. 4E Tomb of Horrors DM Rewards Edition

Which one is better? More challenging and vicious? More fun? Describe to me in single words, only the good things about each module. ("Let me tell you about that module! *BANG*") I'm currently debating with myself on which one I'm going to run as a one shot game for a cheap night of laughs for...

    Tips for making NPCs

I just gave my PCs the Adamantine Wyrmling from Chaos Scar: The Wayward Wyrmling. It's referred to as a companion character, and represented as a monster stat block. I'm considering rebuilding it anyway. Should I just use the Monster Builder, the DMG-NPC rules or the DMG2-Companion Character...

    Keep on Shadowfell...how long?

It takes less than an hour before it burns out. I'm not sure if it'd keep you warm throughout the whole day. If you take out the combats then its only minutes before its reduced to embers.

Are Essentials more old school or just a clever marketing ploy?

As far as I'm concerned, it's not a marketing ploy unless marketing actually went down to R&D and passed down a executive-approved mandate of, "You need to make it more 3e like so it'll appeal to Pathfinder players" or "Bill says he wants it to be more 1e." Granted, what they're doing now with...

    Warden's Grasp

As someone who played a Warden for 11 levels and has a lot of experience with a fighter, I'd have to admit that playing a Warden is tricky. They still have options for punishing enemies, but they require some setup (immobilizing the enemy, cornering it or slowing it). Punishment...

Dragonborn Essentials stat options..anyone know for sure?

How about CHA+STR/INT. That would make them synergize with Warlocks, Wizards, Swordmages AND Sorcerers, another class they are often associated with. Good point. Still, it doesn't stop WotC from making an attribute bonus spread that doesn't map directly to the class. Dwarves are advertised as...

Critique My Build: Dragonborn Paladin of Sehanine

Perhaps, but it would be thematically consistent with Sehanine. I'm totally open to a different kind of attack power/feat synergy, if you have any suggestions. I wish I could go lightning, since Lightning Breath is my favorite Dragon Breath, but Sehanine doesn't really roll with the lightning...

    4th Edition Talking Points

I think this is an important point, and not just in a "kids should play D&D" or "the children are important because they are the future" kind of way but because the only real way to grow the audience for RPGs and take it out of the ghetto of "Quaint Nostalgia" is to make it an accessible hobby...

    Ranger's Twin Strike question

I agree with this. I think the only thing that remotely competes is a Mordenkrad Brash Strike.

    Strange Question RE: 4e.

Whoa. This is heavy. Existential jokes aside, I think a Warforged Warden can deal quite a load of damage when built right, and the race-class combo alone has a strong reputation for survivability. Fighters are great too, and its amazing how effective they are on both damage and durability even...

Attacking vehicles - awesome or silly?

This is why fighters cannot use his Combat Challenge to mark Athas and then attack it as an immediate interrupt whenever Athas makes an attack against Fortitude that doesn't include the fighter.
