D&D 5E (2014) Allow the Long Rest Recharge to Honor Skilled Play or Disallow it to Ensure a Memorable Story

This is impossible in my games, because NPCs are still capable of doing things while the PCs sleep. In fact, I might argue that maximizing the chances of safely taking a long rest requires skilled play. Long rests with potential costs (in terms of NPCs doing things they were going to do anyway)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I think encounter powers (and at will stuff) are more interesting for a martial combatant, sure. However: this will, indirectly, lead back to the short/long rest ratio. Which, in a way, echos 40 year old debates about Prepared Slots/Vancian casting and Spell Points (PSPs). The occasional long...

D&D 5E (2014) Allow the Long Rest Recharge to Honor Skilled Play or Disallow it to Ensure a Memorable Story

They earned the right to attempt one, and the world continues to turn while they do it.

D&D 5E (2014) Can a hasted bladesinger cast a cantrip with the haste extra action

"That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon attack only)" I'd say no.

So the system must be perfect, then.

That isn't how you sell a system, and selling a system (specifically, books in that system) is their business. If DM fiat is required to nudge the scales into balance, the system is poorly designed.

D&D 5E (2014) Allow the Long Rest Recharge to Honor Skilled Play or Disallow it to Ensure a Memorable Story

Anyone can attempt a long rest. Whether or not it will be successful is something else. I expect I'd remove tiny hut from the next game I run, and make non-scribable one use tiny hut scrolls a cheap-ish resource but also one that is in short supply, so a group can only have a few of them for a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

It would have been quite simple in the section on alternate rest durations to mention that the ratio of 2-3 SR to 1 LR was important for game balance. Are you arguing that any DM should be able to figure it out (clearly not true - take a gander at any forum for new players and DMs) or that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

What does it say about the ratio of short to long rests there? It is entirely possible, as the DMG and PHB are written, to have many adventuring days - if not all at a particular table! - with no short rests. This is bad design, and not pointing out the potential issues that may arise -...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I've played every edition but 4e. Just winging balance is not, at all, what we should expect from the premier system in tabletop RPGs. And it is quite clear if you dig into discussions people have about the game. Short rest heavy classes in particular result in people grousing because their...

Just winging game balance is how 3e ended up like it did.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

A whole book where they don’t discuss this critical aspect of game balance. Classes having varying allotments of short and long rest resources is somewhat new to 5e (I didn’t play 4e, but I understand everyone had at will, encounter, and daily powers). The number and frequency of short rests...

Where in that section does it discuss the impacts of deviating from the standard ratio of short to long rests?

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

You mean Chapter 8 of the DMG, where they don't discuss long vs short rests at all? Or the rest variants section in Chapter 9, where they do not discuss the ratio of long to short rests, or the impact changing that may have on game balance? If you're going to be snarky, check the text first.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

This is a core mechanic in this edition and many, many players still don’t grok it. A paragraph describing what it would do (not unlike the sentences warning about what spell points do to warlocks) is all that would be required.

D&D 5E (2014) What martial options would make those characters feel equal to casters?

A lot more skills would be a start, and doses of expertise. Some better rules or guidelines for using some of those skills in the social and exploration pillars. Imho fighters should get about half the doses of expertise rogues get. Expertise in a tool should remain the domain of rogues (the...

    D&D General First D&D Character?

A wizard (magic user? I no longer recall if it was B/X or 2e) with 2 hit points. They were memorable because it took longer to roll them up than they actually survived.

That only discusses changes to the frequency of rests, not the ratio of SRs to LRs. Changing this ratio markedly alters class balance.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

The system doesn't come ought and plainly say that deviating from the suggested rest schedule changes class balance - it should, and offer some alternative rest schedules or resource recovery schemes to maintain that balance for different games. Gritty Realism, for example, doesn't do much if...
