    The JRR Tolkien Pronunciation Poll

Hmm. But so is every word in the human language "made up".

After a few raucous hours at a pub it is likely that all but #5 would be game.

    Goal-Based Level Ups

By "codification of tiers" is how I expressed what you are actually proposing as opposed to the patchwork/slap-dash way such matter may have been treated with in the past.

D&D General The big bad evil... Red Herring

I suggest a poem about the real buried King noting his implements of state, crown, orb and scepter, intricately described. Then the BBEG has such implements as well BUT they are not "quite" as the ancient lore poem described, leaving it up to the PCs to thereafter write off the mix-up in...

    The JRR Tolkien Pronunciation Poll

Just going by "how" Gary pronounced it when we were playtesting G-D series. Not sure if he further formalized its pronunciation in print.

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

If I wasn't so busy I'd try to DM via Zoom and get you all into the Lost City of the Elders (started designing it it 1973) which even caused Gary to pause upon his discovering it. But busy is my middle name, although I've been taking a small, deserved break today.

D&D General Wizards of the Coast releases pay-for-download PDF of the 1974 Original D&D Three Volume Boxed Set (including Tolkien references!)

I understand. In either case you'll have the option. Paul has been in biz for 15+ years with a 100% rating on Ebay and isn't going anywhere soon. PM on the way.

D&D General Wizards of the Coast releases pay-for-download PDF of the 1974 Original D&D Three Volume Boxed Set (including Tolkien references!)

Cool. PM me and I will provide you with P. Stormberg's e-mail. He owns the Collector's Trove, has conducted many, many auctions for TSR Alum and others (myself included) and is your best bet for getting the best price if you ever decide to part with them. Good luck finding GD&H, it's not...

D&D General Wizards of the Coast releases pay-for-download PDF of the 1974 Original D&D Three Volume Boxed Set (including Tolkien references!)

Very valuable, especially the 3 original set even without the box and insert. The others less so. I am guessing, though PM me for a professional appraiser's e-mail, that the 3 original w/out box and insert would sell at auction for $1,000-$2,000, depending. I note that you are missing...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

@The-Magic-Sword The means justifies the end. Not every DM is as astute in tip-toeing around the system, nor do the vast majority in my view see it as necessary to do so. Bravo! It takes some measure of calm and sleight of hand to convince trusting people that you're a trustable a person too. ;)

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

Ward's games were full throttled dangerous, that's why he started you at 6th level. He kinda patterned the pace/action after Harry Harrison's "Deathworld" which he admires: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deathworld So do keep in mind why those extra levels were needed. :)

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

Yeah. I mentioned this up thread, that I have a document of House Rules we used, some Gary's some mine, and I seemed to be (after long reflection) the more experimental of us. Then I would have to append what we did not use, those that were not substituted/amended through HRs. It's really not...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

Heh. "By the book, for the book and nothing but the book! So help me.... WotC." I will not post my "Three Stooges Paradox" I had distilled from past to present DMing, through the editions, here. That said I have stated and staked my position clearly and will add only this. Having followed...

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

The latter. Gary, as I've stated elsewhere, was obsessed with balance. Unfortunately, and at times, the very balance that he was attempting was due to another imbalance he'd created. So sometimes it was. "That which I fear has come upon me," reactions in the plus and minus mayhem of it all...

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

Jim Ward started his players at 6th level bitd. You can guess what sort of chomper campaign he ran, high stakes all the way.

    Goal-Based Level Ups

Though I agree in spirit, and perhaps I'm too tired at the moment for a more cogent response, the definition of "risk" becomes paramount here, ranging from Kamikaze inclined efforts to the polar opposite of "feigned". As well, I wonder if some of this would not necessarily be included in the...
