    Quick Playtest Report

I would suggest giving the rogue advantage on his stealth checks rather than giving the orcs disadvantage on their listen checks.

Just how bad is the playtest fighter? (Trigger warning: math.)

Think of it this way: if the worst balance issue of 5e is that the cleric can buff himself and be almost as good as the fighter...well, that's a sight better than any other game I've ever played.

Just how bad is the playtest fighter? (Trigger warning: math.)

I'm not really that worried about an hour-long buff, to be honest.

Just how bad is the playtest fighter? (Trigger warning: math.)

There's been a significant amount of grumping from the new school segment of the D&D population that the 5e playtest fighter is awful, terrible, completely unfun, and stupid. Now while I will quickly admit that I am not entirely satisfied with the fighter thus far, I am skeptical of how terrible...

    Random thought on advantage/disadvantage.

Haven't played yet so can't say how this would work out in practice (depends on how often advantage/disadvantage comes around), but I'm thinking the following might be nifty. • 2+ (net) sources of advantage is an auto-success unless you roll a 1. • 2+ (net) sources of disadvantage is an...

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

    Moldvay: auto-hit. Mentzer: auto-hit. Rules Cyclopedia: auto-hit. 1e: auto-hit. 2e: auto-hit. 3.0: auto-hit. 3.5: auto-hit. 4e Core: auto-hit (post-errata). 4e Essentials: auto-hit.

    Charging?

I would say that the best way to do charging is move at least ten feet in a straight line and you get advantage on your attack roll while granting advantage on attacks against you.

    Playtest report - English edition

Just a trend I've noticed that really came out with your report: people who seem to have a lot of fun with the playtest play the game in an old-school manner (creative players, quick thinking, intelligent monsters, living world) whereas those who really hate the playtest play the game in a...

Quick question: does the prohibition on online play affect your playtest?

To answer the original question: I have no intention of following the rules of the playtest, so, no, it doesn't. As Plane Sailing as already said earlier in this thread, this is no a place for rants. Editing the rest of this post. -Eridanis

    D&D 5E (2014) Guidelines for D&D Next playtest/adventure discussion here at ENW

WotC's over-corporatization of the entire process is a barrier to playtesting (and rather typical of the company). When Paizo playtested Pathfinder, it was a simple process: sign up and download. WotC's treatment of their IP post-OGL makes me think of a greedy, paranoid troll hunched over a...

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

Because they're finishing casting the spell and if that is interrupted, the spell breaks. Because in Vance's books, a spell was a living thing trapped within the mind of a wizard, and, once it was cast, it left his mind until he trapped it again. He should be able to attempt it every play...

    Lvling-Up Vs Flat Math

Even if we drastically limit the scaling of attack bonuses, I want my fighter to have bigger numbers as he levels up because of what it represents in the game world. If a starting character in plate mail and a shield has 20 AC, then a low-level fighter doesn't have a great chance of injuring...

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

Number of problems with daily magic missile: none. Number of problems with at-will magic missile: kitespam. Number of problems with at-will magic missile with an attack roll: it's not D&D.

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

Two flaws in the game thus far. • The fighter automatically kills a kobold every round, no matter what, even if he misses. • The wizard kitespams magic missile and kills a kobold every round no matter what. Suggestion: drop the 4e-inspired dreck. No damage on a miss and no at-will magic...

    Rant After Play-Test

While there might be math errors, I'm also certain that we aren't seeing all the rules in play. For instance, I think characters who are proficient with a weapon gain a +2 bonus on attack rolls with it, which is why the cleric has a +4 bonus with his warhammer instead of a +2 bonus.

    Healing Word: all my rage.

It's why he has armor and a d8 HD.

    Scaling of attacks and defenses.

This is how D&D has always worked. Players get more HP, monsters do more damage. Monsters get better AC, players get a better attack bonus. It also supposes that the players never fight anything that is a lower-level than they are.

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

First of all, that's not what happens, at least in 3e D&D. Preparing spells is a matter of casting the spell until only a small amount remains un-cast. When the spellcaster actually casts the spell, he's completing the spell (hence the ensuing fireworks). Second of all, magic works according...

    D&D 4E 4e players, why do you want 5e?

I start this thread with no trollishness or malice, but after reading a thread in which one poster was lamenting the return of save-or-dies and Vancian casting, I have to ask: why are 4e players so interested in 5e? As far as I can tell, 4e D&D diverged significantly from previous editions of...

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

Surprised that there hasn't been an outcry over this yet. Personally, I'm completely against them.
