    D&D 5E (2014) Lvl 14 rogue vs. (lvl 14) red dragon

A dragon's senses are so much more than having a high skill check. Trying to turn the ability to sense invisible creatures, see in the dark, and sniff out their prey into a numeric value is foolish, and it is yet another reason that the 3e/4e gameplay paradigm needs to collapse.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

There isn't a dumb noob fighter in 3e / Pathfinder. If anything, the fighter is an advanced class because you have to know the mechanics of the system to make one that doesn't suck. Spellcasters you can pretty much pick-and-choose spells on a whim and you'll end up doing something useful.

I'm almost certain that extended rests don't work this way.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

If anything, fighters should be the only class getting martial damage dice / combat expertise dice / whatever they're called now.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

Stop shifting the goalposts. You're claiming that 4e has more abstractions but they're not actually that more abstract. Hit points and healing surges are more abstract than hit points without healing surges. Overnight healing, likewise, is a design decision, one that pushes hit pionts into...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

Well, I don't. At least not without desperately reaching or using narrative cause-and-effect (this happens because it's supposed to happen). Both Dungeon World and Fiasco are trash, but that's beside the point. That being said, I have a feeling if we go back through the editions of D&D, we...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

Mostly, yes. Cleave is hacking through one enemy and the momentum carries you through to hit a second. Whirlwind Attack swinging your weapon in a wide arc. Power Attack is recklessly attacking. Tripping is tripping.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

Not in my games. Effects-based design is weak-tier game design. Sorry, bro, I need more than a quick line of fluff justifying how your fighter does Weird Power Name. Sneak attack makes sense. The name alone tells you what's going on (you're making an attack that the enemy doesn't expect), but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

If this is how you're going to describe Tide of Iron, then the text needs to make it clear that's what you're doing.

Proof D&D is in serious decline

Proof D&D is in serious decline

But if climate change is real, then why didn't dinosaurs evolve fur to survive? On a side note, someone's always crying about how D&D is d-e-d DEAD. D&D isn't dead, not really, but at this point it's not great. The party with 3e and the OGL is over. In retrospect, 4e's radically different...

Pathfinder 1E Questions about the Pathfinder Online MMO for Ryan Dancey, Mark Kalmes, or Lisa Stevens?

    1. Why should I care about the Pathfinder MMO more than any other MMO? What will make it better than the next generic WOW clone? 2. How much will the MMO resemble Pathfinder? Are we talking "using the Pathfinder name and art style" or "porting the mechanics into the game"? If so, will the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

I've been mulling it over, and I have to retract my earlier statement: I can't get on board with CAGI. The forced movement and automatic damage just don't work for me. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If I were to design a similar maneuver for 3e / Pathfinder, I might make it work similar to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

Regarding Come and Get It: I would say that a feigned retreat would involve Charisma rather than Strength, and I don't much care for the automatic damage. If this is your attitude, then I don't think you'd have fun playing anyway.

    Yes, and sort of.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

Eh, I don't really like Come and Get It, but as long as it has a saving throw attached to it and the appropriate flavor text--which the original did not--I'm willing to accept it.
