Proof D&D is in serious decline

Maybe I'm weird, then. There are times when I feel like seeing a movie, and there are times when I feel like reading a book. There are times when I've seen a movie and wanted to read the book it is based on. There are times when I've read a book and wanted to see the movie it is based on. There...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lvl 14 rogue vs. (lvl 14) red dragon

Uh...to be honest, I don't really care that the rogue is doing huge damage with a sling. (Hitting for 40 damage with one attack vs. hitting with four attacks doing 10 damage each is not really all that different.) The issue is that, in my mind, a fight with a dragon should never be an "easy"...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

Not adding Con modifier to hit points would be a good starting point.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter

The idea that the fighter can have as much narrative control as a spellcaster is foolish. Magic automatically offers more narrative control because it doesn't exist in the real world and is thus not limited by real-world constraints. Even in low magic settings, characters who have access to...

Proof D&D is in serious decline

I don't see D&D as being in competition with MMOs any more than books are in competition with movies. They fill a similar niche, but they are so different that they aren't "fighting" for players.

D&D 5E (2014) Damage in this Packet is Totally Out of Control

I like low-level because the combat is fast and dangerous. That's what's interesting to me, not powers of 4e. Cleave? Reaping Strike? Brash Strike? What about an encounter or daily? Just roll the dice already. I don't want to go full 1e with it, but I appreciate the simplicity of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Should D&D Next be having the obvious problems that it's having at this point in the playtest?

I'm pessimistic about the whole thing. The very first packet had the AC math wrong. Up until this packet, the monster to-hit was wrong. I don't mind that WotC are still working out the kinks with the individual classes; I mind that the foundations of the game were bad even though they involved...

D&D 5E (2014) Damage in this Packet is Totally Out of Control

I don't see how this is less fun. My favorite levels in D&D are low levels.

Is 13th Age stealing dnd next's thunder?

Dungeon World and 13th Age are both D&D-style games for people who don't like D&D. If you like storygames and fantasy, they'll probably appeal. For people who like all the D&D quirks and foibles, you're probably not going to be interested in such.

    D&D 5E (2014) Lvl 14 rogue vs. (lvl 14) red dragon

Depends on your assumptions of the game world. Is a level 14 monster the equivalent to a level 14 PC?

Design idea for "customization" of characters.

It could work, but you're going to run into problems. A d10 HD isn't really worth that much in 3e because your Con bonus is so important. You can either over-value it (which hurts the characters who want to play fighters) or under-value it (which results in everyone having a d12 HD)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lvl 14 rogue vs. (lvl 14) red dragon

I want to like 5e. I really do. But watching the designers struggle with basic design concepts (numbers) is disheartening.

    D&D 5E (2014) Lvl 14 rogue vs. (lvl 14) red dragon

At this point, 5e is just embarrassing itself.

D&D 5E (2014) Damage in this Packet is Totally Out of Control

D&D damage has never been that dependent on weapon type, at least not in 3e / 4e / Pathfinder / OD&D. You're either doing +50 in 3e, stacking damage onto your attacks in 4e, or doing a flat 1d6 if you go really far back.

D&D 5E (2014) Damage in this Packet is Totally Out of Control

Here's the deal, though: a D&D fighter is not an "Olympic gold medalist archer." I've long since given up on emulating real life in D&D because D&D does not really resemble real life. We can approximate real life in the D&D system, but a fighter is not an Olympic archer. Is an Olympic archer...

I like multiple attacks, but it's hard to do them right.

Something I'm considering doing is letting players have a single normal attack against one creature, or they can take a penalty and make attacks against a bunch of extra creatures. Sort of like Whirlwind Attack in 3e, only not bad.

D&D 5E (2014) Damage in this Packet is Totally Out of Control

It's not really odd. It's a symptom of large scale, and it pertains to society and government as well as large corporations. Wizards of the Coast is not just a few guys working on a project. 13th Age is. 13th Age is tightly focused and designed in a certain way. Hasbro is entirely filled...

D&D 5E (2014) Damage in this Packet is Totally Out of Control

A high-level rogue can theoretically do 180 damage with a fork and knife in 3e. I don't see the issue with fighter damage.

I like multiple attacks, but it's hard to do them right.

Multiple attacks are a fairly elegant way of allowing characters to increase their attack accuracy, attack damage, crit chance, and the like without adding in a bunch of complex mechanics. However, it presents two main problems. First, doubling your number of attacks doubles your character's...
