D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

We have that, it's called the wizard. I'm basically just suggesting making its subclasses into things which aren't just a list of spell schools, and giving it back metamagic like it had before. People are always complaining that the wizard is incredibly boring and barebones beyond just having...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I'm almost always on the 'more classes' side. For example I'd love to see the warlord and swordmage get added, as well as a dedicated 'pet class'. But combining wizard and sorcerer, while having warlock eat the remaining sorcerer subclasses is my single exception to this.

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I'd argue that it would allow more options rather than less, as there wouldn't need to be 'duplicates' between them. 1 - Far Realm (aberrant/old one) 2 - Lawful Plane (clockwork) 3 - Upper Plane (divine/celestial) 4 - Draconic 5 - Lunar 6 - Shadowfell (shadow/hexblade) 7 - Plane of Air (storm)...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I'm not saying that all their subclasses are perfectly identical. I'm saying that almost all of their subclasses could easily work for either class thematically. Aberrant Mind and Great Old One are both influence from a far realm entity. A warlock could theoretically make a pact with an entity...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

Ngl I'd like to see wizard and sorcerer get merged into a single 'mage' class. With the subclasses being various arcane traditions such as bladesinging, wild magic, blood magic, dark magic, and anything like that. While warlock scavenges the pieces of sorcerer related to magical creatures, such...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rank your favorite D&D classes

    Order for how much I like them based on theme: 1 - Swordmage 2 - Sorcerer 3 - Blood Hunter 4 - Fighter 5 - Ranger 6 - Rogue 7 - Warlord 8 - Monk 9 - Cleric 10 - Druid 11 - Warlock 12 - Paladin 13 - Barbarian 14 - Wizard 15 - Artificer 16 - Psion 17 - Bard Order for how much I enjoy them based...

D&D General Has anyone ran a level-0 character funnel for 5e?

It's a risk, but no different from a player potentially losing their character in a regular session. If a player loses all their characters early on in the one I'm running, I'll tell them to quickly throw a new one together for the group to encounter shortly.

D&D General Has anyone ran a level-0 character funnel for 5e?

The way I've got it set up the species get their unique abilities and ASI still. Along with a background and equipment from that background. So the species of the character actually has a huge impact on how they play for it. HP is 4+Con modifier. The starting point buy is insanely low though...

D&D General Has anyone ran a level-0 character funnel for 5e?

Yeah this is one of the reason's I'm doing it as a one shot. It allows people to go nuts without worrying about losing their character. Some players do seem to be struggling to understand the premise though. (The other reason I'm doing it as a one shot is due to not being very good at DM'ing...

D&D General Has anyone ran a level-0 character funnel for 5e?

I've been thinking of running a level-0 character funnel as a one shot for my group, and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried running one this edition? If so how did it go, and did the players enjoy it I'm a bit concerned about how well it will work and player mindset, as a character funnel...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Could even have unique ones per subclass, to help build along a particular theme.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Ironically that was worked on / planned by Mearls. Ended up getting axed due to a combo of Mearls leaving and the Paladin's subclasses being stuck to an extremely tight theme and set of mechanics. Sadly Paladin's extremely strong theming and its homogenous mechanics between subclasses mean...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Ironically could swap paladin and swordmage then. Paladin smite used to be a feature, but got changed to spell slots. Spellstrike used to use spell slots, but instead could take the arcane archer route and go with a pool of points like Ki to fuel them. Then again I've yet to meet anyone else...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Just wondering, would you count arcane archer as 'smiting'?

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Also i've always been extremely vocal about how limiting shapeshifting to druid completely cripples the entire fantasy of a shapeshifter. As it will always be playing second fiddle to 9th level spells.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

I've had a problem with that for a long time. The fact that Paladin's signature ability is something so generalized that half the game has it. Likewise I have an issue with Cleric not having a signature ability at all, because Paladin has it too. I've also always had an issue with wizards entire...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Divine smite is the Paladin's signature mechanic. Smite spells, and smite spells under a different name (ensnaring strike, lightning arrow, etc) are available to more than just Paladin. And spellstrike was traditionally more than just a damage dealing mechanic. It could do things like drain HP...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

And wizard lost metamagic when it went to sorcerer. You don't have two classes with an identical signature mechanic. So if the swordmage used a spellbook, wizard would need to get a new signature mechanic. And if both classes had a spellbook, then the swordmage would need its own signature...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Another reason I'm completely again a spellbook being in their core class is because that's the wizards only unique and signature feature. It's like making core cleric have divine smite, or core ranger have wildshape, or core warlock have metamagic.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

I've got no clue how you could argue that Eragorn, Arthas, and the Toa are monks and not swordmages. For all of them, a large part of what they do is casting through their weapons. Hell, all of them wear heavy or at least medium armour at some point or another. The best way to create all of...
