D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

I feel at that point it's just a wizard subclass. Sure, maybe one swordmage subclass could have a spellbook. But I don't think that suits many peoples ideas of what the entire class is. I don't remember Eragon having to open up a spellbook every time he casts 'Brisinger'. His most known ways...

D&D 5E (2024) Things You Think Would Improve the Game That We WON'T See

Main problem I can think of is that a lot of subclasses build directly onto the base class mechanics. With shared subclasses this isn't possible.

D&D 5E (2024) Things You Think Would Improve the Game That We WON'T See

Yeah I feel this about sums it up. Same with the shared subclasses concept from Strixhaven. Great idea in a vacuum. Bad idea when shoved into a game not at all set up to function that way.

D&D 5E (2024) Things You Think Would Improve the Game That We WON'T See

True. I get your point that it isn't going to make that group happy. But if their goal is removing everything which makes differing character unique so people can no longer have mechanics matching the idea they had for their character in their head, is DnD the right game for them? 5e is...

D&D 5E (2024) Things You Think Would Improve the Game That We WON'T See

Yep this. I wouldn't mind just four base classes...... On the condition that subclasses took almost the entire power budget and theme. Honestly I liked 1DnD's initial approach. Class groups with shared mechanics, which then got further split down into classes, and then into subclasses. It...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Honestly I do feel that any potential swordmage class needs more of a 'class story' than 'person who casts and fights'. To me, that's one of the main reasons for which the class has never stuck around, or even kept a consistent class name.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

I feel the swordmage would be Dex and Int (Ignoring Con as everyone wants that) as its primary attributes. But there would be nothing preventing it going Str / Int instead if the player wanted that for their character. No features in the class which actively blocked the use of one or the other...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

I'd argue that if a lot of these 'gishy' spells could be shared between swordmage, paladin, warlock, ranger, some bards, and some artificers, then the return on investment is much greater. While also helping the experience for other classes who juggle combat and magic. It's a bit like how...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

That's why I like the paladin smite spells so much. They emulate spellstrike in a more modern and streamlined way. It's just they're completely gated to paladin, and 1dnd is doubling down on this. If you want to play a non-divine themed elemental swordmage using a nice selection of smite type...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

I liked lots of individual aspects of 4e, but the 'everything is spellcasting powers' part is one of the things I disliked the most.

    D&D 5E (2024) We’ll be merging the One D&D and D&D forums shortly

I'll probably refer to it as 5.5e. Just referring to it as 5th edition could get confusing fast with multiple PHB's, MM's, and DMG's.

5e players accidently invent 4e. Again.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

I absolutely hate how 1DnD has doubled down on those being only paladin spells, inaccessible even via feats.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

ngl, eldritch knight with the smite spells is already more swordmagy than anything WotC offers. Shame there is no cold, lightning, or acid smites.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

What characters from fiction do people consider to be swordmages? Of the top of my head I can think of: Geralt - The Witcher Eragorn - Inheritance Cycle The Toa - Bionicle Spellswords - The Elder Scrolls Death Knights - WoW Rand al'Thor - Wheel of time Characters which could be swordmages, but...

https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/2017_01_UA_RangerRogue_0117JCMM.pdf It was named the primeval guardian, and was insanely tanky. I seem to remember it scored pretty badly though.

Yep exactly Still sad that even the 'Warden' subclass for ranger failed to make it through UA in 5e.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

In a game with more classes, I feel some of the concepts could get split up more. Like a pure martial ranger and a half caster warden being their own classes. Or a martial inventor type class alongside a more magical artificer class.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Ngl I do find it odd how so many people seem to dislike the idea of half casters. There are endless people wanting ranger to be a pure martial, while I also see people saying artificer should be full martial inventor, or full caster, on a regular basis. Less common, but I've seen it a few times...

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

That's the issue. 4e was set up in such a different way to other editions, that copying anything across is the opposite of easy. This applies to both the warlord and the swordmage.
