D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

Honestly, if you're going for absolute minimum classes, I reckon cleric could be merged into magic user. Both are full casters with slightly different spell selections. (I'm not advocating for this as I'm a 'more classes' person.)

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

If warlord has been in the 5e PHB, and another class (maybe sorcerer) hadn't been, I wonder how much this poll result would be different. As in are those classes getting the most votes because they're actually the best choices, or are they getting the most votes simply because they're the...

D&D 5E (2014) WOTC Possibly Removing "Druids" for Religious/Cultural Sensitivity Reasons

unpopular opinion: I like there being an overlap between druids and nature clerics (and believe there should be nature based sorcerers an warlocks), as it allows a player to build similar concepts while using a different class. Maybe a player just played a cleric, or doesn't enjoy cleric...

D&D 5E (2024) What would you like in the 2024 DMG Instead of the Bastion System?

Even though a base system for players is something I've wanted for years, seeing the bastion system has killed all my enthusiasm for it. The entire thing feels so arbitrary and gamey, and completely disconnected from the world around it. But then that's been the case more and more for 5e as it's...

D&D 5E (2024) Half Race Appreciation Society: Half Elf most popular race choice in BG3

Interactions between two different features can have strange results. An example is narwhals and belugas. Both are open water hunters which prey on fish, but in different ways. Male narwhals use their tusk to 'stun' fish to eat them. Belugas and female narwhals are suction feeders. Narlugas...

D&D 5E (2024) Half Race Appreciation Society: Half Elf most popular race choice in BG3

Half orc did this, and I preferred it by a mile to the half elf. It's often seen in irl hybrids too. The resulting offspring are sometimes completely different to the sum of their parts.

D&D 5E (2024) Half Race Appreciation Society: Half Elf most popular race choice in BG3

Thing is, I enjoy cosmopolitan settings where everyone is diverse and mixed together... But I don't want that to be all that's on offer. I also want settings where travel hasn't been happening as easily and for as long, so the different cultures have had very little interaction and mixing.

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

I heavily dislike how the subclass system is implemented for the same reasons. You worded it perfectly about how it provides an illusion of content without providing it. The result has been that 5e is suffering from options bloat just like earlier editions, while at the same time is heavily...

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

'Barbarian' I could see the argument for being a background rather than a class. But 'Berserker' is absolutely a class, and is probably a better name for it than 'Barbarian'. They were a very specialised group of warriors used by the tribes which fought for and against the Roman Empire...

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

I actually disagree here. I think that there being multiple ways to build a single character is a good thing, and it means that if a player wants to build along a theme but hates a particular class, they have other options. Classes being really broad is something I love about 5e.

D&D 5E (2024) What would be the path between Wildshape Templates and Use an Beast statblock?

My thoughts on half of 5e. I know full well that a lot of stuff I like and want DnD to push into more are instead things that the majority want to do the exact opposite.

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

In 5e we got a warden subclass for ranger... Which got cancelled. It's a trend in 5e which really frustrates me. Previous full classes don't even get to exist as a subclass anymore.

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

It's basically got amazing saves, great AC, and passive ability to make enemies struggle to move by making difficult terrain around itself. Enemies end up 'stuck' to it in melee. I think the primeval guardian ranger subclass from UA was loosely based on the warden. As it was an insanely good...

    Half caster tank? Warden maybe?

D&D 5E (2024) What would be the path between Wildshape Templates and Use an Beast statblock?

I definitely prefer the statblock method. I found the template so jarring. Like if you turn into a 'horse' you can't run with other horses. It felt so gamey and jarring, completely disconnected from the in-game setting. Which is a problem 5e is having more and more over time. The health did...

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

At some point there seems to have been a big direction pivot in 5e. Lots of design got changed or didn't happen despite being initially planned. Stuff like creature templates for NPCs was started on and then cut post monster manual. More classes were mentioned a few times early on, with the...

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

Seeing people want to merge martials into each other when we've got so few martials already is depressing. You'd have an edition with almost no martials, and then people would start saying "the martial doesn't fit with all the other mechanics and themes in the game, and is clearly out of place...

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

Just anything less than 12 in the initial book. I'm convinced that we have so many flaws and problems with the current classes because they're trying to push out so much at once with the first PHB. I'd much rather have less classes to start with, where each of them is high quality and balanced.

    D&D General Vote Up A 5e-alike, Part 1: Tone -- Gritty/Low Magic

We ran for a while with only martials and casting up to half caster equivilent (multiclassing with a full caster to achieve that was fine). I feel that mundane enemies works best for a gritty setting, to make the rarer supernatural enemies really feel special and stand out.

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

I'd probably have a PHB with 8 classes, followed by a PHB 2 with another 8 classes released like 5 years later. PHB (Initial Release): Fighter Rogue Wizard Cleric Ranger Paladin Bard Warlord Eberron (Year 2): Artificer PHB Part 2 (Year 5): Monk Barbarian Sorcerer Druid Warlock Summoner...
