D&D General Dinosaurs in your campaigns

Depends on the setting, but yeah as far as I can tell, all official settings just have everything created by magic. I've actually gone a bit too full nerd and designed a tree of life for my setting, as all the creatures classed as beasts or humanoids are naturally evolved in it. Which is why...

D&D General Dinosaurs in your campaigns

We've actually got fossils of full fuzz on some basal ornithischians now! Both Kulindadromeus and Tianyulong have them preserved. There was debate for ages that the quills on Psittacosaurus were just convergent evolution, and not actually feathers, but these fossils have shown floof to be the...

D&D General Dinosaurs in your campaigns

It would be fun to run something like Icewind Dale, but with the wildlife replaced by polar dinosaurs. It would really throw people who only associate dinosaurs with hot tropical or arid environments.

Sauria my beloved! The lore of that setting just grabbed me instantly.

So like a group of lifeforms which get their energy from the weave, rather than sunlight? Ngl that's actually a really cool idea, and probably a realistic one in most dnd settings.

They're not well known in pop culture, but irl dinosaurs did live at the poles. Both the north and south. It didn't get even close to modern polar temperatures, but snow and below freezing weather would have been a possibility, along with months on end of pure darkness due to the sun not rising...

I'm probably going to treat dragons a bit like celestials or demons to explain their 6 limbs. Treat them as creatures of magic which didn't evolve naturally. All the natural species are getting more strict evolutionary origins to them.

I've never thought about dragons in that way, but you raise a good point. If a bunch of funni hairless monkeys can completely change their worlds biosphere and remove practically all megafauna, then surely a bunch of massive flying magical superintelligent reptiles would have an even larger...

D&D General Dinosaurs in your campaigns

All dinosaurs (and pterosaurs) shared a common ancestor which was covered in fuzz. However many groups lost their feathered covering over time and switched to scales. Which groups have feathers and which have scales seems to be a bit all over the place. Every time a scaled animal is found, a...

D&D General Dinosaurs in your campaigns

Mainly because it's the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs which allowed mammals to move into other niches and grow large as they've done today. If there are dinosaurs in the setting, people wonder how modern animals evolved without any differences at all alongside them. And if the dinosaurs...

D&D General Dinosaurs in your campaigns

Yeah it's always seemed weird to me how owlbears aren't classed as beasts.
  13. Frozen_Heart

D&D General Dinosaurs in your campaigns

Initially I ended up excluding all dinosaurs from the campaign setting I was working on (yes I mean all dinosaurs, that includes birds). However then some animals I did include as unique fauna of the setting got moved to be inside dinosauria irl, when previously they were excluded. So the...

D&D Beyond Adds Illrigger Class from MCDM

It got a minor errata and update early 2022, but nothing beyond that. We've not heard anything at all about the class in relation to 2024 5e. I've got no idea if Mercer has any plan to go back over it again.

D&D Beyond Adds Illrigger Class from MCDM

Really hope that this is a sign that WotC might be a bit more willing to add new classes this 'edition'. (And hopefully get the Blood Hunter updated. The thing felt underpowered by Tasha's. Now in 5.5e it barely feels compatible at all).

D&D General What is appropriate Ranger Magic

If ranger ended up a pure martial, it would definitely be nice to see warden or seeker brought in as a primal half-caster to replace it in the previous niche. (or shaman, but their history as a 'nature cleric' might make them unsuited to being a half-caster)

D&D General What is appropriate Ranger Magic

I mean considering how much I despise eldritch knight/bladesinger when compared against previous dedicated gishes like the swordmage, magus, and duskblade, giving the primal gish that same treatment isn't selling it to me like you think it is.

D&D General What is appropriate Ranger Magic

I feel that the 5e warlock is just trying to be too many things at once, and the half-caster playtest warlock made this even more clear. Half the fanbase wants a blaster full caster for their warlock, while the other half wants an arcane gish. The result is a mess.

D&D General What is appropriate Ranger Magic

Yeah the half-casters are by far my favorite classes, and I wish there were more of them. So seeing people want to remove the half-casters makes me sad.

D&D General What is appropriate Ranger Magic

Theoretically, if ranger did become a pure martial, what class should replace it as a primal half-caster? I've noticed that the entire concept of half-casters seems unpopular. I'm always seeing people saying ranger should be pure martial and artificer should be a full caster. And I've even seen...
